LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Three University of Utah men's tennis doubles teams along with singles players Wes Hancock and Phillip Eilers remain in the consolation rounds at the ITA Mountain Regional Championships in Las Vegas, Nev. Friday.
In singles play Friday No. 17-seeded Hancock was defeated by No. 3-seeded Johnny Parkes of New Mexico, 6-1, 6-3 in the quarterfinal round. No. 16-seeded Eilers fell in three sets to No. 28-seeded Martin Zimmerman of Denver, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5. Hancock and Eilers will continue in consolation play Saturday.
John Taylor was defeated by Andrew Landwerlen of Denver, 7-6, 6-0, in the fourth round qualifier consolation singles along with Timmy Allin. No. 24-seeded Artem Kuznetsov of Idaho defeated Allin, 6-2, 6-3.
In the doubles round of 16, No. 7-seeded Eilers and Taylor advanced after they topped Raydner Ramos and Felipe Raw of Montana, 8-6. The No. 9-seeded duo of Allin and Hancock was defeated early in the day by No. 4-seeded Miles Bugby and Parkes of New Mexico, 8-3. Eilers and Taylor played the team of Bugby and Parkes in the quarterfinals and were defeated, 8-6.
In consolation doubles Stephen Jacobs and Jason Smits advanced to the third round after beating David Cysneiros and Ben DeMarios of Montana, 8-1. They will face Stefan Simikic and Frederick Walsh of Boise State Saturday.
Benito Suriano and Othman Ouariti-Zerouali beat Art Karas and Nico Riego De Dios of Eastern Washington, 8-3. The doubles team went on to top Utah teammates Allin and Hancock, 8-3. They move on to face No. 1-seeded Eduardo Salas and Roman Stoisavlijevic of New Mexico State Saturday. Eilers and Taylor will play in the quarterfinals of consolation doubles Sunday.
Consolation play for both singles and doubles will take place Saturday and finish Sunday.
