SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah men's basketball team officially opens the 2008-09 regular season Saturday at the Jon M. Huntsman Center as the Runnin' Utes host Southwest Baptist. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m.
Utah is coming off of a 59-44 win against Grand Valley State in its only exhibition game of the season. The Utes were led by Tyler Kepkay's 26 points on 8-of-14 shooting, including a 5-of-7 effort from three-point range.
Kepkay is one of five returning starters from last year's squad but came off the bench in the exhibition. It is likely that he will be used off the bench throughout the season, filling the role of the graduated Johnnie Bryant. Bryant came off the bench as a senior to finish second on the team in scoring and was one of the top three-point threats in the Mountain West Conference.
Southwest Baptist is a member of NCAA Div. II and belongs to the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA). The Bearcats are a highly-touted Div. II team, currently ranked in several preseason polls, and slated as high as No. 6 by the Sporting News. The reigning MIAA champions, SWB is the preseason favorite to repeat.
Last time out, Southwest Baptist fell at Southern Illinois in an exhibition game, 87-79. Their leading scorer was junior center Matt Rogers who totaled 19 points and 18 rebounds while also blocking five shots. A Div. II preseason All-American, Rogers is the top returner for the SBU squad, putting up 14.9 points and grabbing 7.8 boards per game last year.
Utah has won 11 of its last 12 season-openers, all played in Salt Lake City. This game will mark the first-ever meeting between Utah and Southwest Baptist.
