SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah men's basketball team hopes to bounce back from Saturday's season-opening loss as the Runnin' Utes (0-1) host Green Bay (0-0) Tuesday at the Jon M. Huntsman Center at 7 p.m. The game will mark the opening round of the Glenn Wilkes Classic, to be completed later this week in Daytona Beach, Fla.
The Utes are coming off of an 80-79 loss at home to Southwest Baptist. The Utes outshot the Bearcats by percentage, .444-.422, but surrendered 16 three-pointers in the contest while going 27-of-38 from the free throw line. Utah also held a 43-31 rebounding advantage. Senior center Luke Nevill posted game-highs for points (28) and rebounds (14) en route to this 19th career double-double. Led by Nevill's inside play, Utah outscored the Bearcats in the paint, 40-25.
"I think every club needs to go through some adversity to become the team they will eventually be," said head coach Jim Boylen. "We don't want to go through it but we are, so now we have to grow, learn and get better from it. There is no shame in losing, the shame is in not responding and getting better. We are working as hard as we can. I like my team and I believe in my guys."
Tuesday night's game will mark the season-opener for Green Bay. The Phoenix went 2-0 in its exhibition home games, defeating Minnesota-Duluth, 93-61, and UW-Eau Claire, 92-61. Green Bay shot a combined 62-of-118 from the floor (.525) in the two games, including 19-of-42 from three-point range (.452). The Phoenix also forced 48 turnovers and made 24 steals in the two games.
"Green Bay is a well-coached, veteran club," said Boylen. "They will show pressure defense and run a half-court execute offense. They have some good pieces and good depth. We are expecting a heck of a game."
This game will mark the first-ever meeting between Utah and Green Bay and kicks off a stretch of three games in six days for the Runnin' Utes. The team will head to Daytona Beach, Fla., Wednesday, for the remaining games of the Glenn Wilkes Classic. The Utes will take on Ole Miss Friday at 6:30 p.m. ET at the Ocean Center, and will face Morgan State at 4:15 p.m. Saturday.
