SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah men's basketball team heads south again this week, this time bound for Springfield, Mo. The Utes will take on Missouri State, Friday at 7 p.m. CT in the Bears' second game in their brand new JQH Arena. The Runnin' Utes are currently riding a three-game winning streak as they enter their first true road contest of the season.
The Utes are 2-0 away from home this year, however they were both neutral site games. Utah defeated Green Bay at home, then Mississippi and Morgan State last week in Daytona Beach en route to the Glenn Wilkes Classic championship.
The Utes' current three-game winning run is tied for the second-longest under head coach Jim Boylen. A fourth victory would tie Boylen's longest win streak in his two-year tenure and equal the longest winning stretch since Nov. 18-30 of 2005.
Senior center Luke Nevill looks to carry over the stellar play that earned him the Glenn Wilkes Classic MVP as well as Mountain West Conference Player of the Week honors. The Utes also hope to continue the consistently strong play from senior guard and GWC All-Tournament selection Lawrence Borha (12.5 ppg, 3.3 rpg) and sophomore guard Carlon Brown (8.0 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 3.75 apg).
Missouri State is coming off of a 62-57 home-opening win against Arkansas on Saturday. In the inaugural game inside JQH Arena, the Bears rallied from behind multiple times to overcome their Southeastern Conference foe on the back of 16 points, six rebounds and three steals from redshirt-freshman forward Kyle Weems.
Utah and Missouri State met for the first time last year as the Utes came away with a 66-54 victory at home. Nevill was Utah's high-scorer that game with 16 points and was also the top Ute assist-man with six helpers. The Bears went on to a 17-16 record last year, including an 8-10 mark in the Missouri Valley Conference, to chalk up their seventh consecutive winning season.
