SALT LAKE CITY - Senior guard Tyler Kepkay scored a game-high 26 points to lead the University of Utah men's basketball team past Grand Valley State, 59-44, in a preseason exhibition at the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
Coming off the bench, Kepkay shot 8-of-14 from the field, including a 5-of-7 effort from three-point land. He was also a perfect 5-of-5 from the free-throw line. Seniors Luke Nevill and Shaun Green were the game's leading rebounders, pulling down eight boards apiece.
Green also contributed five steals to the defensive effort, while Nevill recorded three of the team's nine blocks. The Utes forced 17 turnovers in the game including 11 steals. The Runnin' Utes held the Lakers to just .300 from the field (15-of-50), including a .200 3-point field-goal percentage (2-of-10). GVSU went 12-of-21 from the free-throw line (.571).
Utah shot .386 on the night (17-of-44) and went 20-of-23 from the free throw line (.870). Kepkay was the only Ute to hit from long range as the team went 5-of-19 (.263) from beyond the arc.
Grand Valley State, a member of NCAA Div. II, was led by Justin Ringler's 11 points, going 4-of-13 from the field. He was also the Lakers' top rebounder with seven boards. GVSU also got double-figure scoring efforts from K'Len Morris and Alvin Storrs, who each logged 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting.
Utah's defense held the Lakers without a field goal for the first 8:56 of the game, allowing only two made free throws until the Lakers hit a layup at the 11:04 mark of the first half. The Utes outscored GVSU 21-6 over the initial 14:34 of the game en route to a 26-16 halftime lead.
Utah recorded 11 assists on 17 buckets in the game and held a slight rebounding edge at 35-32.
The Utes open the regular-season Nov. 15 against Southwest Baptist at the Jon M. Huntsman Center. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m. MT.
