Runnin' Utes Host UNLV Wednesday Night
The University of Utah men's basketball team will be looking to be .500 after the first trip through the Mountain West Conference Wednesday. The Runnin' Utes will host league-leading UNLV at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Huntsman Center. Saturday's game will be televised on The Mtn.
Utah enters Saturday's game with a 12-8 overall record and a 3-4 MWC mark. With Saturday night's road win over Colorado State, the Runnin' Utes have now eclipsed their win total from one season ago. Freshman Carlon Brown enjoyed the best night of his young career vs. the Rams, hitting for 16 points and grabbing seven rebounds. Both totals were team-high marks for the game.
UNLV enters this week with a 17-4 overall record and a 6-1 league mark. The Rebels' only loss in conference play was at Air Force back on Jan. 12. UNLV's other three losses came to Louisville, UC Santa Barbara and Arizona. The Rebels have won five straight and are coming off a 79-60 shellacking of New Mexico in Las Vegas on Saturday.
Runnin' Ute Fast Breaks
? Two Utah players are averaging double-digit points per game, while four more average 5.5 or more.
? Utah trailed at halftime vs. Wyoming last Wednesday night. The Utes are now 0-7 when the scoreboard does not read in their favor at the intermission.
? Utah has held six different opponents to 54 points or less this season. The Runnin' Utes did not hold a single 2006-07 opponent to less than 55 points.
? Utah holds a 508-325 (.610) record against current members of the Mountain West Conference. The Utes are .500-or-better against all other MWC teams.
? The Utes currently rank No. 1 in the MWC in field-goal percentage. Utah is currently converting at a .490 clip.
? Utah is No. 2 in the MWC in scoring defense, allowing 60.9 points per game. That average also ranks the Runnin' Utes No. 36 in the nation.
Brown's Big Night
Freshman guard/forward Carlon Brown enjoyed the best outing of his young, 20-game collegiate career Saturday night at Colorado State. Brown scored 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting, while also grabbing seven rebounds. Both were career-high totals. He also hit his first collegiate 3-pointer vs. the Rams. But it wasn't just offense. Utah's coaches were equally impressed with his defense, calling it his best outing this season at that end of the floor. Brown saw more playing time (25 min.) than usual, with Luka Drca serving a one-game suspension.
Dirty Dozen
Utah was 11-19 last season and has now surpassed that win total this year. The Utes are 12-8, giving them one more victory in 20 games than they mustered in 30 last season. Utah needs just two more wins to match the 14 victories that the 2005-06 team put together. The Runnin' Utes need to win four of their final nine regular-season games to assure themselves of their first winning record since 2004-05.
