SALT LAKE CITY - Utah finishes its tournament schedule this week with the Judi Garman Classic, hosted by Cal-State Fullerton. Included in the schedule is a rematch against No. 1 Arizona State plus games with No. 18/19 Washington, No. 14/19 Fresno State and No. 14/18 DePaul.
Weekend in Review
Utah recorded a 2-2 record at the San Diego State Classic, including winning a rematch against San Diego, 14-6, and downing Cal-State Fullerton, 7-2. The Utes also played a strong game against No. 3 Texas A&M, falling 3-1.
Angie Boardman hit .462 for the weekend, including a 2-for-3 performance against Texas A&M, driving in the Utes lone run of the game. She was also 3-for-4 with five RBI against San Diego. Kara Foster also had a solid weekend, with six RBI, a triple and two doubles, batting .357.
Brittany Parker led the Utes in the circle, going 2-1 on the weekend with 16 strikeouts. She pitched a complete game against Texas A&M.
The Utes scheduled game against New Mexico State was canceled due to poor field conditions.
Scouting the Competition
The Utes play five games at the Judi Garman Classic.
Arizona State (30-1): The Sun Devils and Utes meet for the second time this season, with Utah falling 9-0 in the first meeting. Kaitlin Cochran leads the team with a .507 batting average, 38 hits and 13 doubles. Katie Burkhart is one of the top pitchers in the country with a 0.43 ERA in 97.0 innings pitched. She started the last game against the Utes.
DePaul (17-6): The Blue Demons are having a solid year, led by Amber Patton, who is batting .361 with 26 hits on the year. They have a pair of strong pitchers in Becca Heteniak (1.22 ERA, 8-3) and Laura Frankiewicz (2.12 ERA, 6-2).
Fresno State (23-5): The Bulldogs take on Northern Colorado before heading to the Judi Garman Classic. Haley Perkins has 39 hits, 15 RBI and a .398 batting average on the season while Haley Gilleland is batting .356 with 31 hits.
Illinois (14-11): The Ilini return to the diamond after a weekend off. Shanna Diller (.364), Hope Howell (.342) and Daniel Zymkowitz (.321) lead Illinois at the plate. Claire DeVreese is 10-7 in the circle on the season with a 2.01 ERA.
Washington (19-6-1): Washington is coming off a doubleheader sweep of Utah State. Bailey Stenson leads the Huskies with a .400 batting average and 36 hits. Jace Williams has a team-best 24 RBI on the year. Aleah Macon (1.38 ERA, 8-3) and Caitlin Noble (2.08 ERA, 11-3) lead the Huskies on the mound.
Phillips Watch
All-West Region and three-time all-Mountain West Conference selection Diana Phillips is nearing several career marks at Utah. She hit her 13th career triple against Southern Utah to tie for second all-time at Utah. The all-time triples record is 19, held by Sandy Rhea (1995-98).
Her current .358 career batting average is second all-time.
In addition, Phillips has averaged over 59 hits a season in her career (209 total hits). If she continues on the same pace in 2008 she will rank among the top five at Utah in hits.
Phillips is batting .395 on the season with a team-best 30 hits.
Over The Boarderline
Junior transfer Angie Boardman has four game-winning hits, driving in what would be the winning run, this season. Her most recent came against Wichita State. With the Utes down 2-1, she hit a double with two runners on base. She also had game-winning hits against Wisconsin (2/8), Southern Utah (2/9) and Texas State.
Boardman is second on the team with a .359 average this season and 17 RBI. She had Utah's only hit of the game against No. 1 Arizona State (3/7) and two of the Utes four hits vs. No. 5 Texas A&M (3/14).
