SALT LAKE CITY - Utah takes on a tough schedule this week, traveling to Tempe, Ariz., for the Diamond Devil Invitational. Included in the schedule is a game against No. 1-ranked Arizona State, with competitions against UC Davis, San Diego and Pacific.
The Week In Review
Utah traveled to Texas for the Texas Classic, coming away with a 3-2 record. The Utes won their first three games, a 9-1 victory over Wisconsin, a 5-4 victory against then-No. 22 Texas and a 3-2 win over Wichita State. In bracket play, Utah fell to Wisconsin, 4-2, then dropped the third-pace game to Texas, 2-0.
Diana Phillips led Utah with a .500 batting average. She had both of Utah's only two hits in the second game against Texas. Angie Boardman hit .417 with a team-high five RBI. She drive in the winning runs against Wichita State.
On the mound, Brittany Parker started two games, coming away with a 1-1 record and a 1.17 ERA in 18 innings pitched. She struck out 29 over the course of the tournament. Ashley Smuda started three games, going 2-1, with wins over Wisconsin and Texas.
Scouting the Competition
The Utes face four teams at the Diamond Devil Invitational:
Arizona State (22-1): The No. 1 ranked Sun Devils earned their first No. 1 ranking ever in this week's polls. They have four starters hitting over .400, led by Mindy Cowles .471. Krista Donnenwirth is one of only two players to start all 23 games, with 25 hits, 34 RBI and six home runs.
Katie Burkhart leads the squad on the mound with an 11-1 record, a 0.39 ERA and 145 strikeouts.
UC Davis (10-11): The only team that Utah is scheduled to play twice at the tournament, the Aggies are led by Julie Stauder, who is batting .345 with 19 hits and 10 RBI. Michell Espiritu has 20 hits with a .313 batting average.
Jessica Hancock is the top pitcher for UC Davis, with a 6-6 record and a 2.62 ERA.
San Diego (6-13): The Toreros are led by Lindsey Fleet, who is batting .327 with 18 hits and 13 RBI. She also has a team-best five doubles.
On the mound, Jennifer Ellenbeck is 2-8 on the season with a 4.27 ERA while Alyssa Luna is 3-3 with a 5.95 ERA.
Pacific (8-11): The Tigers have played a tough schedule. Kellee Wilson is batting .345 with a team-best 19 hits and 18 RBI. She also has four home runs. Casey Goldsand is hitting .340 on the year.
Chelsea Engle is the Tigers No. 1 pitcher with a 6-4 record and a 2.05 ERA. She has 60 strikeouts.
Over The Boarderline
Junior transfer Angie Boardman has four game-winning hits this season. Her most recent came against Wichita State. With the Utes down 2-1, she hit a double with two runners on base. She also had game-winning hits against Wisconsin (2/8), Southern Utah (2/9) and Texas State.
Boardman is hitting .500 (9-of-18) with runners on base this season.
Freshman Sensations
The Utes feature two freshmen, Laura Dahlberg and Brittany Parker, who have each made strong debuts recently.
Parker has made three starts on the season, including two starts at the Texas Classic against then-No. 22 Texas and Wichita State. She struck out a season-high 13 batters against Texas, with 10 strikeouts vs. Wichita State.
Parker is 3-2 on the year with a 1.42 ERA. Her 59 strikeouts ranks fourth in the Mountain West Conference. Her best pitch is her change-up.
Dahlberg got her first start of the season against Texas State and has started at third base ever since. She has been a solid defensive addition on the hot corner.
