Runnin' Utes Wrap Up Regular Season at UNLV Saturday
The University of Utah men's basketball team will play its regular-season finale Saturday at UNLV. The Runnin' Utes assured themselves of a winning record with an 82-61 rout of Colorado State Tuesday night. The Utah-UNLV contest tips off at 1 p.m. PST (2 p.m. MST) and will air nationally on Versus.
Utah enters Saturday's game with a 16-12 overall record and a 7-8 MWC mark. The Utes got 20 points and nine rebounds from Shaun Green in their 21-point win over CSU Tuesday. Three other Utes scored in double digits in the contest, with Luke Nevill pouring in 19 points, Johnnie Bryant tallying 14 and Kim Tillie tossing in 13.
UNLV comes into Saturday's matchup coming off a 59-45 loss at New Mexico Tuesday. The Rebels are 22-7 overall and 11-4 in the MWC. UNLV shot just .333 from the field in Tuesday night's loss to the Lobos. Wink Adams was the only double-digit scorer for the Rebels, who scored their fewest points of the season.
Runnin' Ute Fast Breaks
? Two Utah players are averaging double-digit points per game, while three more average 7.6 or more.
? Utah has had the edge in bench points 23 times in 28 games this year. Utah held a 41-14 edge off the bench in Tuesday's win over Colorado State.
? Utah has held six different opponents to 54 points or less this season. The Runnin' Utes did not hold a single 2006-07 opponent to less than 55 points.
? Utah holds a 512-329 (.609) record against current members of the Mountain West Conference. The Utes have a winning record against every other member of the league.
? The Runnin' Utes currently rank No. 1 in the MWC in field-goal percentage. Utah is converting at a .484 clip from the field, which also ranks No. 22 in the nation in the latest NCAA rankings.
? Utah is No. 4 in the MWC in scoring defense, allowing 62.7 points per game. The Runnin' Utes have held all but four of their opponents below their current averages in regulation play this season.
Going Out Winners
Tuesday's victory over Colorado State assured the Runnin' Utes of their first winning season since 2004-05. Utah was 14-15 overall in 2005-06 and 11-19 in 2006-07. The Utes now have a 16-12 record and are assured of at least two more games. Therefore, 16 wins assures Utah a winning record, which is a first for every player on the roster with the exception of Chris Grant, who played in 2004-05.
Nevill's Notes
Junior center Luke Nevill ranked ninth in the nation in field-goal percentage last season, shooting .637. The 7-foot 1-inch Aussie hasn't been quite that hot this season. However, he heated up a bit in his last two outings, going 16-of-28 (.571) and has raised his overall field-goal percentage to .544 (No. 2 in the MWC). Nevill has averaged 20.5 points in 21 minutes over the last two contests. Nevill's 1.61 blocked shots per game lead the MWC. His 45 rejections this season are the most for a Ute since Andrew Bogut swatted 65 shots in 2004-05.
Drca's Dishes
Sophomore guard Luka Drca has eclipsed the 100-assist mark, making him the first Ute to do so in three seasons. The Utes' top playmaker last season was Johnnie Bryant, who handed out just 81 assists. Drca dished out 10 Tuesday, pushing his total to 104 (an average of 3.9 helpers per game). His current total is the most since Marc Jackson recorded 128 assists in 2005-06. Drca currently ranks No. 4 in the Mountain West Conference in assists per game and is the only non-starter in the league's top 10 in that category.
Junior forward Shaun Green enjoyed his best all-around game of the season Tuesday night vs. Colorado State. He scored a season-high 20 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the field and his eight field goals were also a season-high. Green hit four 3-pointers in the contest vs. the Rams, the most triples he has made since nailing four on Jan. 26 vs. TCU. He is now averaging 7.9 points per game. In addition to the scoring output, Green pulled down nine rebounds vs. CSU, pushing his rebounding average to a season-high 5.0 per game.
