PROVO, UTAH - The University of Utah men's tennis team ousted No. 34 TCU on Thursday for a 4-3 upset over the Horned Frogs. The Utes are now on a 3-0 conference winning streak and are 3-1 overall in the conference. Utah men's tennis team has now tallied an 11-9 record as they head into Friday and Saturday's competition against UNLV and BYU.
"I was really pleased with the guys. They put together our best match of the year, as a team. We are looking forward to playing UNLV and BYU," said head coach F.D. Robbins.
The Utes swept doubles play for the second consecutive conference match. Zach Ganger and Miron Mann started the day off on the right foot with a strong 8-4 win over TCU's top doubles team Cosmin Cotet and Kriegler Brink. Clinching the doubles point for the Utes on Thursday was Wes Hancock and Timmy Allin at the No. 3 spot. The Ute duo took on Jack Seider and Zach Nichols for a well executed 8-5 victory.
Finishing up on the courts on Thursday was Othman Zerouali-Ouariti and John Taylor at the No. 2 spot. The Ute duo was challenged by Emanu Brighiu and Adrian Simon from the Horned Frogs' roster. The TCU duo fought long and hard trying to earn a single win in doubles play, but couldn't finish out on a strong note. Zerouali-Ouariti and Taylor took the win 8-7(6).
Due to poor weather conditions, the match had moved indoors to cause a delay for singles matches to begin. Ganger stepped in first for the Utes at the top spot to face No. 35 Cotet from TCU. Although the Ute played a high level game over the top 50 opponent, the Horned Frog defaulted in the second set for Ganger to take the win 6-4, 4-1.
At the No. 3 spot, Zerouali-Ouariti struggled against TCU's Kriegler Brink. The Horned Frog earned a swift victory over the Ute, but Utah still had a 2-1 lead. At the No. 5 spot, Taylor found himself chasing after Zach Nichols from the Horned Frogs' squad. Nichols defeated the true freshman with a straight 6-2, 6-2 victory.
Hancock finished out next at the No. 4 spot against TCU's Adrian Simon. The Horned Frog slid by in the first set 7-5, before Hancock changed his game plan to send the second set into a tie break and winning 7-6(11). The Ute didn't mess around in the third set against Simon. Hancock dominated the last set to earn 5-7, 7-6(11), 6-1 to give Utah a 3-2 lead once again.
Mann had a tough loss at the No. 2 spot on Thursday against Emanu Brighiu. The Ute battled to take the first set 7-6, but couldn't quite finish out strong in the next two sets against Brighiu. The Horned Frog tied up the overall match after defeating Mann 6-7, 6-4, 6-4.
The match win came from the No. 6 spot on Thursday. Allin faced TCU's Jack Seider for an escalated match for both teams. The Ute took the first set easily, but was unable to follow through in the end during the second set. With the team behind him, Allin forced an immaculate third set to take the win 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 to give Utah the win.
On Friday the Utes will face UNLV at 1:30 p.m. MST pending weather conditions.
