SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah volleyball team is nearing the end of its spring training period, which included a pair of tournaments and sand volleyball training.
Some of the highlights of the spring include the return of All-American middle blocker Emillie Toone, who redshirted the 2007 season following a knee injury. In addition, two-time Alaska Gatorade Player of the Year Sarah Hibbert, who signed in the fall, enrolled in school and joined the team for the spring.
"This was an extraordinarily successful off-season and spring training," head coach Beth Launiere said. "Everyone has made significant improvements in their volleyball skills and conditioning. This is one of the hardest working teams I've coached in the off season and they are motivated to make a championship run next year."
In addition to hosting a spring tournament, the Utes traveled to UC-Santa Barbara to compete.
"We had wins over UNLV, Utah State and Cal-Poly," Launiere said. "We also had a valuable training session with Utah State."
During the final week of training, the team is taking advantage of no outside competition to train outdoors in the sand.
"We feel like playing outdoors is fun and it gets them ready to play outdoors in the summer," Launiere said. "It's great conditioning and we feel strongly that it improves their indoor game significantly."
The Utes finished the 2007 campaign 15-15 and as runners-up at the Mountain West Conference Tournament.
