SALT LAKE CITY - University of Utah head men's basketball coach Jim Boylen has announced the hiring of Stan Johnson as an assistant coach with the Runnin' Ute program.
"I'm excited about Stan Johnson," Boylen said. "His familiarity with the State of Utah, his recruiting ties to California and his passion to be a Ute are all big assets for us. Stan is a high-character individual who we feel will represent the program very well. He understands what we're building here and is passionate about helping us build it."
Johnson, who will be working in California on behalf of the Utes for much of this week, will be on campus either late this week or early next.

Johnson spent the last year as an assistant coach at Cal State Northridge. The Matadors finished 20-10 overall and earned a share of the Big West Conference regular-season championship last season.
Prior to his time at Cal State Northridge, Johnson spent three seasons on the bench at Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar, Mo. The Bearcats were 50-30 during Johnson's time on the staff, with three consecutive winning seasons, which was a first in school history. In addition, SBU won a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association title and made a trip to the NCAA Division II Tournament in 2005-06.
In 2005-06, Southwest Baptist enjoyed a tremendous season. The Bearcats were 27-5 overall and opened the season with a school-record 14 consecutive victories. SBU won a conference title, earned a number-one seed in the NCAA Division II South Central Regional and finished the season ranked No. 6 in the nation.
Johnson started his coaching career at Bemidji (Minn.) State University. In one season at Bemidji State, Johnson helped coach the Beavers to a 20-10 mark and their first-ever 20-win season. BSU was 14-2 in conference play that season, earning a berth to the NCAA Division II Tournament and leading the nation in 3-pointers per game, with 11.7.
Johnson graduated from Taylorsville (Utah) High School, where he earned all-state and all-region honors and served as a team captain. He had a solid academic career at Taylorsville High as well, being named to the Who's Who Among American High School Students and Who's Who Among American High School Athletes lists.
In addition to prepping at Taylorsville High, Johnson played three seasons of basketball at Southern Utah University. From 1998-2002, Johnson was a three-year letterwinner. He was a team captain and starter for one season. During 2000-01, Johnson helped lead the Thunderbirds to the Mid-Continent Conference (now Summit League) title and a berth in the NCAA Tournament, where they dropped a close, 68-65 decision to No. 3 seed Boston College. Johnson was a three-time member of the Mid-Con All-Academic Team. He earned a bachelor's degree in communications from SUU in 2003.
Johnson played his senior season of college basketball at Bemidji State, where he served as a team captain and earned honorable mention all-conference accolades. He averaged 13.5 points and dished out a team-high 114 assists during his one season with the Beavers.
