FORT WORTH, TEXAS - The sixth-seeded San Diego State Aztecs upset No. 3 seed Utah on Thursday at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center to advance to the semifinals of the 2008 Mountain West Conference Men's Tennis Championships. Utah was one of three teams this season to clinch a share of the MWC regular season-title.
Utah started the day out on a high note with the doubles point. The Ute duo of John Taylor and Othman Zerouali-Ouariti played their best match of the season against Danny Heidecker and Tim Schulz van Endert from the Aztecs. The Ute duo led off play at the No. 2 spot with a well executed 8-2 victory.
Utah's Timmy Allin and Wes Hancock followed with a 9-8(2) hard earned victory over Achim Ceban and Andre Feliz at the bottom position to clinch the point.
The Aztecs pulled themselves together before singles play. The Utes came out ready to play, but San Diego State came back with revenge in their eyes. The Aztecs stormed back in singles play to win four consecutive matches in straight sets to seal the contest.
Heidecker began the scoring for San Diego State, defeating Jason Smits by a score of 6-1, 6-2.
Hancock had chances in the first set to take the win, but couldn't find his winning momentum against Juan Gomez. The Aztec took the win 6-4, 6-1 to give SDSU a 2-1 lead.
Zerouali-Ouariti put in too little too late in his match against San Diego State's Ceban at the No. 3 spot. The Aztec took the match with ease 6-1, 6-3.
At the No. 2 spot, Miron Mann was fighting harder than ever against Matan Shitrit from the Aztecs. The Ute senior took care of business to finish his season on a high note with 6-3, 6-4 win over the Aztec to close the overall match score to 3-2.
San Diego State's Feliz would clinch the match for San Diego State at the No. 6 position. Utah's Allin played the Aztec in front of his friends and family from his home town, and wasn't quite able to overcome his nerves to pull out a win. Feliz took the win 6-4, 7-5 to give San Diego State a 4-2 win.
