SALT LAKE CITY - After five seasons as the University of Utah assistant baseball coach, Bryan Conger has accepted the head coaching job at his alma mater, Tarleton State.
Conger has been Utah's pitching coach the last five years. While working with the hurlers for the Crimson and White, Conger mentored two all-conference pitchers (Josh Cooper and Stephen Fife).
"I'm really proud of Bryan," said Utah head coach Bill Kinneberg. "This is a dream come true for him. He gets the chance to return home to coach his alma mater, and there's nothing better than that. I couldn't be happier for him or his family.
"We'll begin a search for a new assistant coach immediately."
This past season, his pitching staff recorded a combined 5.23 earned-run average, ranking third in the conference. It was Utah's lowest ERA in 33 years. Utah pitchers also held opponents to just a .294 batting average. Fife, Utah's No. 1 hurler in 2008, was drafted in the third round by the Boston Red Sox.
"I'm very excited to take the next step," said Conger. "Both my wife and I are from that area, and our kids were born there. So, this is a very special move for the entire family. I'm thrilled to take the helm of a program that I think very highly of. This program is going to go Division I in the next couple of years, and I'm excited that I get to guide it into a new era.
"I enjoyed my time at Utah. I'm very grateful to Bill Kinneberg, Chris Hill and Pete Oliszczak for the opportunity I had there. This job helped me hone the necessary skill to become a head coach."
This will be Conger's second stint at his alma mater. While earning his master's degree in education from Tarleton, Conger served as the pitching coach for the Texans from 1998-99.
After working at Tarleton, Conger went on to coach at Lamar Community College and Cloud County Community College. He left Cloud County to join Utah's staff in 2004.
Conger played three years at Tarleton State (1993-95). He earned his bachelor's degree in 1995.
