SALT LAKE CITY - Head coach Bill Kinneberg announced the addition of Mike Crawford to the University of Utah baseball coaching staff. Crawford, who will serve as Utah's pitching coach, comes to Utah after a two-year stint as the associate head coach at Yavapai College in Prescott, Ariz. Crawford replaces Bryan Conger, who left to take the helm at Tarleton College.
"The one thing we needed to do was bring in experience to replace Bryan," said Kinneberg. "Mike has worked at three junior colleges in Arizona, and he's established himself as one of the best pitching coaches in Arizona's junior college ranks.
"I coached him when he played at Arizona, and I have watched him develop over the last 11 years. I know he's a good fit for me and for this program."
Crawford spent the last two seasons at Yavapai where the Roughriders were 41-16-1 in 2008, losing in the regional championship to the eventual No. 3 team in the tourney. They climbed to as high as No. 9 in the national polls, and they won their league title with a sparkling 30-8 mark. Crawford's pitching staff was a big part of that success as it was one of six schools in the 13-team league with an earned-run average below 4.00 (3.81). It was fourth in the conference strikeouts (393).
From 2002-2005, Crawford was the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at Cochise College in Douglas, Ariz. He helped the Apaches to a pair of second-place league finishes (2004, 2005), and his 2005 pitching staff had the lowest earned-run average in the conference (2.66). As CC recruiting coordinator, he saw three of his four recruiting classes play for a regional championship.
Crawford spent the summers of 2003 and 2004 as the pitching coach for the Duluth Huskies of the Northwoods League. There, he was in charge of the pitching staff and assisted in recruiting the 25-man roster. Prior to his stint in Duluth, Minn., he worked two seasons at Pima College in Tucson, Ariz.
He played at the University of Arizona from 1999-2000. He was a starting pitcher for the Wildcats both years, and he was named the Pac-10 Pitcher of Week in May, 1999. He graduated from UA in 2001 with a bachelor's of science in communication. He went on to get his master's from the United States Sports Academy in June, 2008.
The Tucson native's playing career began at Yavapai College where he was its starting pitcher in 1997-98. In 1998, he won the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference (ACCAC) Pitcher of the Year accolade.
Crawford and his wife, Sarah, have a three-year-old son, Kolby.
