SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's track and field team has its full squad back from the winter break for the Utah State Wilson Motor Invitational in Logan, Utah, on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. in the Nelson Fieldhouse. The Utes will be competing against Utah Valley University and Utah State University.
After a limited group opened the season last Friday and Saturda at the BYU Cougar Invitational, the Utes will be competing in 11 of the 14 events in the Wilson Motor Invitational.
"We are excited to get going with our full squad back together," said associate head coach Burke Bockman. "This is a good opportunity to see where our whole group is standing. This should be another good weekend for the throwers after a number of them set personal bests last week. We'll be looking for that success to transfer into this coming meet. It is exciting to see how our freshmen do in their first races in their Utah uniforms."
Saturday's competition will open with the pole vault and weight throw events. Klaudia Rokossa, a freshman from Germany, will be competing in the pole vault after arriving in the United States one week ago. Senior Aimee Nay and sophomore Laryssa Simpson will also be competing in the event.
Eight throwers will be competing, led by senior Josefin Berg, who will return this week to open up her indoor track season. Joining Berg are seniors Chasity Toilolo and Jessica Hampton, along with junior Sarah Grimm as athletes to watch for this weekend. Freshman Brianna LeRoy will not be competing in the weight throw on Saturday, which is scheduled for 10:00 a.m., and the shot put start time will be determined after the other field events finish.
The long jump event will feature two athletes; an upper and lower classman. LeRoy and senior Haley McAllister-Birkeland will be representing the Utes. The high jumpers on Saturday will be sophomore Mandi Witherspoon and freshman Langley Iverson. Both events are scheduled for 10:30 a.m.
Lauren Endersen and Kellie Anderson come into the indoor track season after an impressive 2008 cross country season. They finished 21st and 62nd, respectively, in the 2008 NCAA Mountain Regional meet. The two athletes will be competing in the 3,000-meter event that is scheduled to start at 11:30 a.m.
The 60-meter hurdle preliminaries are scheduled for 11:50 a.m., with the finals starting at 1:30 p.m. The hurdlers on Saturday will be LeRoy and junior Chelsey Kaplar. The 60-meter dash will showcase McAllister-Birkeland and junior Whitney Wellington. The preliminaries will start at 12:20 p.m., with the finals slotted at 1:50 p.m.
Two Utes will be competing in the 800-meter run on Saturday. Senior Chelsea Shapard and freshman Lucy Yates will be heading up the competition at 1:00 p.m. Shapard returns this season after finishing 15th overall in the semifinals at the NCAA Championships.
The 4x400 relay is slotted to begin at 2:10 p.m., featuring Wellington and Ashley Patterson. The other two runners will be determined during the week.
