Utah Hosts LSU In Final Non-Conference Game Tuesday

SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah men's basketball team (9-5) hosts yet another non-conference contest with national implications Tuesday as the LSU Tigers of the Southeastern Conference come to the Jon M. Huntsman Center. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. MT and the game will be televised live on The mtn.
Utah enters the contest riding a three-game winning streak. In their last outing, the Utes opened up MWC play at home with a 91-67 drubbing of Wyoming last Saturday. Their previous two wins include a 66-65 upset of then-No. 16/17 Gonzaga and a 60-52 road win at UC Irvine.
Despite being 13 games into the season, Utah will be the first true road opponent LSU has faced this season. All 12 of the Tigers' wins have come at home, while their lone stumble was a 72-61 neutral-site loss at the hands of Texas A&M. In the latest national rankings, LSU is receiving votes in the ESPN/USA Today coaches' poll, but not in the AP poll.
Utah and LSU have met twice before, with each team earning a 14-point victory at home. Their last matchup in 2005 saw the Utes capture a 69-55 win in the Huntsman Center. The year before, LSU was on the winning end of a 65-51 decision at the Maravich Center.
The Utes are led by reigning MWC Player of the Week, senior center Luke Nevill (Perth, Australia) is coming off of a career high performance with 29 points and five blocks against Wyoming. For the season, he is averaging 17.6 points per game to go with 8.6 boards and leads the league in blocks per game (2.43).
Nevill's team-leading counterpart for LSU is Marcus Thornton, a 6-4 guard, averaging 18.4 points and 5.2 rebounds per game. He has also contributed 25 assists and made 22 steals.
LSU will mark the second SEC opponent that Utah has faced this year. The Utes topped Mississippi on a neutral floor at the Glenn Wilkes Classic earlier this year, 83-72. Prior to this year, Utah had not faced the SEC since a 62-52 loss to Kentucky in the 2005 NCAA Tournament.
