SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of Utah men's basketball team (10-5, 1-0 MWC) gets back into conference play Saturday against San Diego State (11-3, 1-0 MWC) at Cox Arena. Tipoff is slated for 1 p.m. PT and the game will be televised live on VERSUS.
Utah enters the contest riding a four-game winning streak. In their last outing, the Utes dismantled the LSU Tigers, 91-61, in Salt Lake City, shooting over 60% from the field for the second straight game. The win streak also includes a 91-67 victory in the conference-opener against Wyoming, a 66-65 upset of then-No. 16/17 Gonzaga and a 60-52 victory on the road at UC Irvine. With a win against SDSU Saturday, Utah could tied its longest winning streak under second-year head coach Jim Boylen, equaling its five-game run earlier this season.
San Diego State comes into the game looking to move to 12-3 and match its best record after 15 games since joining Division I 25 years ago. The Aztecs are also riding a four-game winning streak, including three non-conference victories at home and a 61-44 road win at Air Force in their last outing.
The Utes are led by reigning MWC Player of the Week, senior center Luke Nevill (Perth, Australia) is coming off of a 23-point performance against LSU, after recording career highs with 29 points and five blocks against Wyoming in the game before. For the season, he is averaging 18.0 points per game to go with 8.4 boards and leads the league in blocks per game (2.47).
Nevill's team-leading counterpart for SDSU is Kyle Spain, a 6-5 senior forward, averaging 15.2 points and 5.2 rebounds per game. He has also contributed 15 assists and made 15 steals.
San Diego State and Utah met twice last season, splitting the contests with each team winning its respective home game. In last season's game in San Diego, the Utes lost a 64-56 overtime decision. Utah then exacted its revenge in Salt Lake City with a 72-66 victory over the Aztecs while holding a "100 Years of Utah Basketball" celebration.
Utah leads the all-time series between the two teams, 51-12, including a 19-9 mark on the Aztecs' home floor.
