PROVO, UTAH - The University of Utah track and field team finished their first day of competition in the BYU Cougar Invitational on Friday. Eight athletes competed in a combined four events on Friday, highlighted by senior Chasity Toilolo winning the women's shot put with a toss of 46'3.25".
Toilolo also placed third in the weight throw (50'11") under junior Sarah Grimm that took second with a new personal best of 54'10". Freshman Candus Aiello made her first collegiate appearance on Friday, placing 10th in the weight throw with a toss of 42'9.50".
Also featured in the throwing events was senior Jessica Hampton earning fifth-place in the weight throw (45'9.75"), and sophomores Wanda Dalton and Kastin Frostl. Dalton placed sixth overall in the weight throw with a toss of 45'9.25" and Frostl finished 12th-overall with a toss of 41'1.75".
Senior Haley McAllister-Birkeland competed in the long jump for a second-place finish with a jump of 18'5.25". Breanna LeRoy made her first jump in a collegiate competition on Friday with a 17'2.75" distance.
In the pentathlon event, LeRoy competed in four of the five events. She finished the 60-meter hurdles in 9.33, had a high jump of 5'5.25" and long jump of 17'10.25". In the shot put, LeRoy had a toss of 31'4.50". She did not compete in the 800-meter run.
"Breanna (LeRoy) did exactly what we wanted her to do. All of the freshman did a great job and learned a lot from their first meet," said head coach Kyle Kepler. "The story of the day is how well the throwers did. It is exciting to see this early in the season. Tapio (Kuusela) has done a great job with them. Hayley (McAllister-Birkeland) had a nice last jump and overall great series."
SATURDAY'S EVENTS
Saturday's events will feature McAllister-Birkeland and Chelsea Kaplar running in the 300-meter event. Kaplar and LeRoy are also set to compete in the 60-meter hurdles. Senior Mandi Witherspoon will compete in the high jump.
