SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah men's tennis team completed the second day of the Utah Invitational held at Liberty Park Tennis Center. Freshman Dmytro Mamedov will continue tomorrow in consolation finals and doubles team Eilers and Golding advance to semifinals of consolation doubles.
Mamedov advanced to consolation finals after defeating Nate Ballam of Utah State in the quarterfinal round, 6-4, 6-2, which put him against Michael Eraso of BYU in the semifinals. Eraso withdrew due to injury advancing Mamedov to the final round to face Henning Hipp tomorrow at 10:00 a.m.
Eilers and Golding also advanced to the semifinal round after Georgy Batrakov and Daniel Hwang withdrew due to injury. The Ute duo will face Amit Maharaj and Sven Poslusm of USU tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. The winner will go on to the final round to see David Hintze and Cole Paterson of Weber State.
In singles No. 1 seeded Eilers topped Roman Warias of BYU, 6-2, 6-1, in the quarterfinals to advance to a semifinal round against Spencer Smith of BYU. Eilers fell to Smith in three rounds, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.
Stephen Jacobs was defeated by No. 2 seeded Thomas Shubert of BYU, 7-5, 6-4, in the quarterfinal round.
In doubles Jacobs and Benito Suriano advanced to the quarterfinal round after Ricardo Campos and Eraso of BYU withdrew due to injury. In the quarterfinals Jacobs and Suriano fell to Smith and Evan Urbina of BYU, 9-8(5).
Mamedov and Jason Smits topped Hintze and Paterson of WSU, 8-6, before falling to No. 4 seeded Sasha Kiehne and Simon Unger, 8-6, in the quarterfinals.
No. 2 seeded Eilers and Golding were defeated by Henning Hipp and Spencer Marchant of WSU, 8-6, in the round of 16.
