SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah soccer team (7-8-2, 2-1-1 MWC) plays a crucial MWC match this week at Wyoming (9-5-3, 3-1-1) Saturday as the Utes look to bounce back from another difficult home loss. With just two conference games remaining, the Utes can mathematically guarantee themselves a place in the MWC Tournament with a win from either game. Wyoming is currently tied for second in the league standings with 10 points, while Utah ranks fifth with seven points. The top six teams make the MWC Tournament.
The All-Time Series...
Utah 16-1-0 all-time against Wyoming, including a 4-1 mark in Laramie. The Utes' only loss to the Cowgirls came in their last meeting on UW's home field, a 4-1 defeat in 2007. The Utes bounced back to take a 2-0 win from them in the MWC Tournament just a few days later. In last year's meeting, Utah captured a 1-0 victory with just over a minute left in double-overtime, in a game that was televised live on the Mtn. from Ute Field.
Scouting The Opposition...
Wyoming - The Cowgirls' only blemish in conference play came last weekend as San Diego State went up to Laramie and took a 2-0 win. In their last action, Wyoming and UNLV battled to a 1-1 draw. UW has league victories over TCU, 2-1 (ot), New Mexico, 2-1, at Air Force, 3-1, all on the road.
In all games, Wyoming's offense has been spread around, with five players scoring multiple goals, including three players with three apiece. Carmen Blume leads all scorers with four goals and two assists. Emma Wilson tops the assists category with seven. In league play alone, Blume, Nicole Rice and Mara Cosgrove have each scored twice.
Defensively, Courtney Merkle has started all 17 games, allowing 15 goals and making 80 saves, for a goals-against-average of 0.87 and a save percentage of .842. She has posted five shutouts this year.
The Cowgirls are led by second-year head coach Danny Sanchez, who is now 17-15-4 (.528) in his two seasons.
Last Time Out...
The University of Utah soccer team (7-8-2, 2-2-1 MWC) fell to New Mexico (11-3-2, 3-2-0) by a 1-0 score at Ute Field Sunday night. The Utes were undone by a corner kick that was curled directly into the goal.
With the game tied at 0-0 and just under 37 minutes to play, Jennifer Williams made herself the Ute fans' villain. The Lobos' leading scorer with 10 goals, she struck a right-footed corner kick that bent just inside the near post for the game's only damage on the scoreboard.
Utah had several looks at goal but was unable to convert, narrowly missing on several occasions. The Utes had two clean headers sail just over the crossbar, while another rang the framework. Kelli Cornell made six saves in the Lobo net, including a nice reaction-save on Utah's leading scorer, senior midfielder Kelly Isleib (Park City, Utah).
Terry and Freshman Class Maintain Strong Play...
In Utah's 3-1 win over TCU Thursday night, Terry scored for the second straight game and notched her fifth goal of the season. She becomes the first freshman to register at least five goals in a season since Adele Letro scored seven in 2005.
With five of the seven freshmen on the roster logging at least one goal or assist, the class as a whole has accounted for eight scores and four helpers (20 points), or roughly 29% of the team's total offense. All seven have seen significant playing time with Terry, Allie Wisner (Bozeman, Mont.), Stephanie Lemeza (Mississauga, Ontario) and Zoe Van Gorder (Park City, Utah) all cracking the starting lineup.
Defensive Trends...
Utah has held its opponents scoreless on five occasions this year, going 5-0 in those contests. However, when allowing at least one goal, Utah's record drops to 2-8-2.
Turpen Earns Weekly Conference Honor...
Last week, sophomore goalkeeper Hannah Turpen (San Clemente, Calif.) was named the Mountain West Conference Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for her performances at UNLV and San Diego State.
Turpen allowed just one goal in 200 minutes of action on the road last weekend while making nine saves. In the Utes' 1-0 win at UNLV, the San Clemente, Calif., native, made two saves en route to her fourth shutout this season and the sixth clean sheet of her career. Against San Diego State, Turpen faced 24 shots and made seven saves to preserve the 1-1 tie in double-overtime.
Turpen wass the first Utah soccer player this season to receive a weekly honor from the conference. It is the first league honor of her career.
Threatening From Everywhere...
Utah has now scored 23 goals on the year with 10 different players finding the back of the net. The Utes have had offensive production from all over the field, evidenced by the following goal breakdown by position: forward (15), holding midfield (7), center back (2), attacking midfield (1) and outside back (1). Utah has gotten multiple goals from six players, while four others have lit up the scoreboard once.
Manning Notches 100th Career Victory As Utes Shut Out Princeton...
Manning earned his 100th career win with the 2-0 victory against Princeton, all of which have come at Utah. Averaging more than 13.5 wins per year over his previous seven years, Manning looks to become only the second MWC coach ever to hit the century mark, joining BYU's Jennifer Rockwood.
Utah Picks Up First Ranked Win Since 2007...
With the 1-0 victory against No. 19-ranked Santa Clara on Aug. 28, Utah registered its first win over a ranked opponent since beating No. 16 BYU in Provo, 1-0, in October of 2007. It was the Utes' first victory over a ranked opponent at home since defeating No. 15 BYU, 1-0, in October of 2006.
Utes Tie For Second In Preseason MWC Poll...
Utah has been selected second in the MWC Preseason Coaches' Poll. The Utes are predicted to finish behind BYU, who received 49 points and seven of eight first-place votes to capture the top spot. TCU received the only other first-place vote in the poll.
San Diego State and UNLV were predicted to finish in fourth and fifth place with 30 and 28 points, respectively. New Mexico was ranked sixth (18 points), while Wyoming (14 points) and Air Force (7 points) rounded out the top eight.
Utah's Mountain West Conference History...
Utah captured its first conference title in 1999, the inaugural year of the MWC. The Utes were named co-champions as they finished in a three-way tie with San Diego State and BYU.
Utah's next league title came in 2003, as the Utes swept both the MWC regular-season and tournament championships. Utah went undefeated in conference play for the first time in school history, posting a 6-0-0 record. The Utes then topped BYU by a 2-0 score in the tournament championship match, held in Salt Lake City. The successful 2003 campaign kicked off a string of four straight years in which either the regular season or conference tournament hardware would rest in the Utes' trophy case at season's end.
In 2004, Utah won its second consecutive MWC Tournament championship, advancing past San Diego State in the finals. The match was tied 1-1 following regulation and overtime play, but the Utes eventually conquered the Aztecs in penalty kicks to claim the title.
The 2005 season saw Utah finish atop the MWC standings in the regular season, posting another undefeated conference record at 6-0-1.
With another flawless year in 2006, registering a 7-0-0 record, Utah joined BYU as the only two programs in the MWC's history to post back-to-back unbeaten seasons. Utah and BYU also share the distinction of being the two most successful soccer programs in MWC history. Utah has captured either the regular-season or conference tournament championship five times, while BYU has claimed a title eight times. Both squads have also twice doubled up to sweep both titles in the same year.
From the Mind of Manning...
On the game at Wyoming this Saturday:
"I think it's clear from the season Wyoming is having and the results that they're getting, that team has grown in it's self belief. They have been difficult to score on have managed to win a lot of close games. They have a solid goalkeeper, good, hard defenders and very determined attacking players. I'm sure it will be a close and hard-fought game.
On having just one game this week:
"We are going to use this week to continue working on the little things will help us be successful as we head to the end of the season. In the next couple of weeks have three games plus the conference tournament, so it will be important for us to use this time to prepare for all of those."
On the current conference standings:
"As we have said from the start, our conference is extremely well-balanced and all the games are close. The margin of victory in our league is razor thin and I still think there is a lot to be determined. There are going to be a lot more tight games and a lot of movement in the standings as we head toward the tournament. We just have to focus on our next game and try to get a result that will help us."
