SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah men's basketball team (1-1) hosts Southern University (0-2) at the Jon M. Huntsman Center Saturday. The Runnin' Utes will look for their second-straight victory, while Southern strives to pick up its first win of the 2009-10 campaign.
Junior guard Carlon Brown (Riverside, Calif.) is Utah's leading scorer at 17 points per game, while senior forward Kim Tillie (Cagnes-sur-Mer, France) is the top rebounder at 6.5 boards per contest. Senior guard Luka Drca (Belgrade, Serbia) leads the Utes and the Mountain West Conference with 15 assists, averaging 7.5 per game.
Southern's top offensive threat is Tony McGilveary, averaging 11 points per game, while Norm Nixon is the top rebounder at 5.0 boards. Nick Walls leads the Jaguars in assists at 3.5 per game.
Utah is coming off a 68-67 victory against Utah State on Wednesday as the Utes picked up their first win of the season. Brown led the Utes with a career-high 22 points, including a career-best three 3-pointers. Drca also hit double digits, scoring 11 points, while senior forward Tillie pulled down five boards to lead the team in rebounding for the second straight game.
The Jaguars are 0-2 after taking a 93-61 loss at Oklahoma State and a 61-45 setback at Baylor. Southern's trip to Salt Lake City marks the third leg of a nearly three-week road stretch that will see the Jaguars play seven away games before hosting their first regular-season home contest. After taking on the Utes, they head to Provo to face BYU on Nov. 24.
Third-year head coach of the Runnin' Utes Jim Boylen holds a 43-26 (.623) career record.
Southern is coached by Rob Spivery, who holds a record of 29-36 (.446) in his third year at the helm.
Saturday's game marks the first time Utah and Southern have ever faced off on the hardwood.
