Dear Tennis Friends,
As most of you are preparing pumpkin pies and turkeys, we wanted to send you one last email for this fall. It is has been quite some time since our last email and much has happened since then. Let's start with the most important news: with great pleasure we would like to announce that we have signed Matthew Cowley and Devin Lane to National Letters of Intent. Matt, whose grandfather Joe played for the Utes in the late 1950s, is a 4-star recruit who will join us in the fall of 2010 from Woods Cross High School. Matt has been ranked as high as #86 in the country and is the current #1 singles state 4A champion. In 2008, Matt finished as the #1 player in the 18 and under category in the state of Utah.
Devin Lane comes to us from Highland High School and until a recent injury, was a 5-star recruit ranked as high as #42 in the country. Plagued by injuries in the last year, he has gone through a tough time, but he has battled his way back and recently was a runner up in the Great Pumpkin Tournament in Las Vegas, NV. In 2006 and 2007 he won the #1 singles 4A State championship. Devin is a product of the coaching from former Ute great Mike Martines.
We are extremely excited about having these two top prospects join our program. It is always great to add local guys to your team, especially when they are as talented in the classroom and on the tennis court as these two young men.
Unfortunately, we also have some sad news. CJ Adamson, our local walk on who was in his second year with us, has decided to leave our program. CJ has put in a great effort the past year and a half, but has decided that the combination of school and tennis was too demanding. Although CJ only had a 0-2 singles record while playing for us, he had become one of the emotional leaders of this team. It is sad to see him go, but we still want to wish him all the best in his career and hope to see him at many of our tennis matches in the near future.
For those of you who haven't followed us on the web, allow me to give you a short summary of our fall season. We just completed our official practice for the fall semester. Our guys have done a great job and put out a great effort this semester and we hope that it will transfer into wins in the spring. Our first tournament of the year, our Utah Invitational, definitely didn't go as planned. With only two players in the quarterfinals (Stephen and Phil) in singles, it was probably one of our worst showings in our tournament in years. Stephen had a good tournament and upset Cassidy Mears from BYU, while Dima was the Runner Up in the consolation bracket. Phil and Alex had a slow start and lost in their first match together, but they regrouped and won the consolation doubles event. In a way, it is good to have your shortcomings shown to you early in the season, but we had still hoped for a better showing in our own tournament.
The following week we travelled with only 5 active players to the Regional Tournament in Las Vegas, where our play showed some improvement. The highlight of the trip was Phillip Eiler's play. He reached the finals in singles and won the doubles tournament with freshman doubles partner Alex Golding. Their doubles victory earned them a trip to the National Indoors, where they joined the best 16 teams in the country. Unfortunately for them, they lost in the first round to the #1 doubles team in the country, 8-3.
Overall, we hope that our experiences in match play in combination with all of the hard work on the practice court will prove beneficial. As the guys are getting in great shape, and now have some time to heal some of their injuries, we are looking forward to having you join us for our home opener on Friday January 20 @ 5pm against a very good Utah State University team. We have a wonderful home schedule this year and we hope that our talent and hard work will lead us to our 25th conference championship in April.
Since this probably will be our last email for this fall, we wanted to wish everyone a very happy Thanksgiving and all the best for the holidays.
Thanks and GO UTES,
Men's Tennis Coaching Staff
