SALT LAKE CITY - Utah sophomore shortstop Michael Beltran was named to the Mountain West Conference Preseason All-Conference team, as selected by the MWC head coaches and select media.
Beltran finished second on the team with a .372 hitting percentage last season, while hitting .389 during conference play. He led all freshman hitters in the MWC and finished fourth overall in the league. The final month of the season, Beltran batted .397 (29-for-73). He was third on the team with 73 hits. He was also named to the Rivals.com Preseason All-MWC team.
"It shows how much the coaches and media respect Michael after only his first year," Utah head coach Bill Kinneberg said. "In order to have a good defense you have to be strong in the middle and Corey Shimada and Michael form one of the best infield combinations in the league."
Utah was picked to finish fifth in the MWC Preseason Poll. TCU was selected to win its fourth consecutive regular-season title, garnering nine first-place votes and 75 points. The Horned Frogs were followed by San Diego State (56 points, one first-place vote), New Mexico (52 points, one first-place vote) and BYU (47 points).
The Utes open their season on Friday, Feb. 20, at Loyola Marymount.
