LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The University of Utah softball team defeated Cal State Fullerton 6-4 Saturday night at Stephanie Lynn Craig Park. The Utes improved to 6-3 this season and have now won three straight games.
Lindsey Palmer threw her first career complete game, allowing four runs on six hits while striking out three and walking one. The Stansbury Park, Utah, native also recorded the first win of her career and is now 1-0 this season.
Freshman third baseman Whitney Holm was the only Ute with multiple hits in the game, going 2-for-3 with a pair of singles and an RBI. Holm leads the Utah squad with 11 RBI through her first 10 collegiate games.
Cal State Fullerton scored the first run of the game in the opening frame, then Utah got things going offensively right away in the bottom of the first inning. Starting center fielder Kara Foster led off with a double to right-center field, before being driven in by a single by Holm. Catcher Andrea Hoffman drew a walk, then advanced to third base after a sacrifice bunt by Staci Hemingway and after Fonoti hit into a fielder's choice. Angie Boardman came through with a two-out RBI single, her third of the season.
CSF's Francesca Gonzales hit a home run over the center field fence to knot the score at 2-2 in the third inning.
The game remained tied until the Utes came to bat in the bottom half of the fifth inning. Foster led it off by reaching on an error by the Titans. Holm hit another single, then Hoffman reached base on another CSF error, while Foster plated the go-ahead run.
Shortstop Sharee Fonoti built a cushion for the Utes with three-run home run to right-center field to give the Utes a 6-2 advantage they would never relinquish. Fonoti went 1-for-3 with three RBI on the day. The home run was the first for Fonoti this season and the 10th of her career.
CSF came up with two runs in the seventh inning, but Palmer struck out Nichole Johnson looking for the final out of the game with bases loaded.
The Louisville Slugger Classic concludes tomorrow as Utah takes on UC Davis. First pitch is scheduled for 11:15 a.m. PT.
