LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The University of Utah softball team got a pair of solo home runs from freshman third baseman Whitney Holm and senior right fielder Angie Boardman as the Utes earned their fifth victory of the season in a 2-0 shutout victory over Oregon State Saturday afternoon at Stephanie Lynn Craig Park.
Utah (5-3) got off to a solid start on offense early against the Beavers. Holm hit a solo home run in the top of the third inning over the left field wall to provide all of the offense Utah would need. Holm now leads the team with five home runs and 10 RBI in 22 at-bats this season.
On the mound, junior Ashley Smuda threw her first complete game shutout of the season with a seven-inning, four-hit effort against the Beavers that also featured two walks and a strikeout. This was Smuda's fourth shutout as a Ute as well as her 22nd complete game.
Smuda was able to get out of a jam against OSU in the fourth inning, when two of the first three batters she faced reached base thanks to a leadoff double by Dani Chisolm before designated player Stefanie Ewing drew a walk. But Smuda was able to get a pair of groundouts against OSU's Paige Lowe and Erin Guzy to end the threat.
Smuda also plenty of help behind her as Utah executed perfectly on defense and even came up with a gem of a play in the Oregon State half of the sixth inning. Shortstop Sharee Fonoti dove to her left to stop a ball hit by Ewing in the bottom of the sixth inning. She rose to her feet and made a throw over to first baseman Staci Hemingway in time for the third out of the inning.
The Utes cushioned their lead in the top of the seventh inning when right fielder Angie Boardman turned in her first home run of the season with a solo shot over the left field fence to set the final margin and give Utah a 2-0 win.
The Louisville Slugger Classic continues today as Utah takes on Cal State Fullerton. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. PT.
