SEATTLE, WASH. - The University of Utah track and field team also competed in the Washington Husky Classic on Saturday with Chelsea Shapard, Sarah Grimm, and Josefin Berg posting big marks. The one-day competition saw several big efforts being made by Utah athletes.
Shapard won her heat in the 800-meter run. This was her fourth appearance in the event and finished in 2:10.39, which ranks second amongst Utah's indoor all-time performance list.
In the weight throw, Grimm took fifth after an impressive 57'5.5" effort, a new personal record. Berg took ninth and had a season best throw of 55'2".
Utah's 4x400-meter relay finished fourth overall, comprised of Ashley Patterson, Chelsey Kaplar, Whitney Wellington, and Shapard. Their finish time was 3:48.12, just ahead of the team from California-Fullerton in their heat.
"We started out okay: nothing good, nothing bad," said associate head coach Burke Bockman. "We started rolling when the throwers started doing well and after we heard how well the group in Iowa were doing. Chelsea [Shapard] ran a really smart race and dominated the last 200 meters. This was a great competition for us and really set us up for the Mountain West Conference meet."
