COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - University of Utah forward Shaun Green has been named the Mountain West Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
A 6-8 forward from Salt Lake City, Utah, Green led the Utes (18-7, 9-2 MWC) to a pair of home wins over then co-league leading San Diego State (67-55) and Air Force (74-59) last week. Against San Diego State, he recorded his first double-double of the season with game-highs of 21 points and 10 rebounds. Green shot 7-for-11 from the field, including 3-of-6 from beyond the arc, while also tallying three steals, two assists and one block in 31 minutes. The win over the Aztecs gave Utah sole possession of first-place in the conference standings. Against Air Force, he scored 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting (2-for-5 from three-point range) while grabbing three rebounds and collecting two steals and one block in 27 minutes of action.
On the week, Green averaged 17.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 1.5 assists while shooting 63.2 percent from the field (12-for-19), 45.5 percent from three-point range (5-for-11 and 83.3 percent from the charity stripe (5-for-6).
One of the top "sixth men" in the conference, Green is the third-leading scorer (10.6 ppg) and rebounder (5.2 rpg) on the Utah squad. He leads the team in steals (1.32 spg), good for fifth in the MWC, and is second in blocks to center Luke Nevill with 1.04 per game, fourth-best in the MWC. Green ranks sixth in the MWC in 3-point FG made (2.16 per game) and seventh in 3-point FG percentage (.386). He is also listed at No. 11 in the MWC in total rebounding (5.2 rpg) and 10th in defensive rebounds (4.04).
Green recently became the 34th Utah player ever to eclipse the 1,000-point mark for his career and has now increased his total to 1,036, 32nd on the Utes' all-time scoring list. He ranks third all-time at Utah in 3-point field goals made (214) and 3-pointers attempted (519), and sixth in steals (130).
The Player of the Week award is the first of Green's career. He becomes the second Ute honored by the league this season, joining senior center Luke Nevill, who has racked up four weekly honors.
