Ute Softball Enters Wildcat Invitational On Four-game Win Streak:
The University of Utah softball team takes its four-game win streak to the Wildcat Invitational this weekend in Tucson, Ariz., on the campus of the University of Arizona. Utah opens with North Dakota State Friday at 1:30 p.m., and then faces host No. 11/11 Arizona at 6:30 p.m. An identical schedule will be played Saturday, except the game against U of A will start at 4 p.m. The Utes conclude the event Sunday against the Wildcats at 11 a.m.
Louisville Slugger Classic Review:
Utah improved to 7-3 overall by going 4-1 during the three-day Louisville Slugger Classic last weekend in Las Vegas, Nev. The Utes gained wins over Portland State, Oregon State, Cal State Fullerton and UC Davis. The only loss Utah suffered was to No. 21/18 Nevada.
The Utes dropped a 13-0 decision to No. 18 Nevada Friday afternoon, but went on to win their last four games.
Junior Ashley Smuda (Scottsdale, Ariz.) gave up six hits and allowed one run while striking out two and walking three in Utah's 6-1 win over Portland State Friday. Andrea Hoffman (West Valley, Utah) drew a walk to force in the Utes' first run then Whitney Holm (Spanish Fork, Utah) hit her first career grand slam to give the Utes a 5-0 edge in the third inning.
Smuda threw her first complete game shutout of the season with a seven-inning, four-hit effort Saturday against Oregon State that also featured two walks and a strikeout. Solo home runs by Holm and Angie Boardman (Spokane, Wash.) provided the offense for the Utes.
Shortstop Sharee Fonoti (Ewa Beach, Hawaii) built a cushion for the Utes with a three-run home run to right-center field Saturday night against Cal-State Fullerton to give the Utes a 6-2 advantage en route to a 6-4 win.
Comeback Kids:
Utah found itself down 3-1 heading into the seventh inning Sunday against UC Davis. Holm slapped an RBI single to left field to drive in Brittany Parker (Murray, Utah), before Kara Foster (Derby, Kan.) and Hannah Clements (Poway, Calif.) plated runs. Thanks to the RBI against the Aggies, Holm leads the Utes with 12 RBI.
Taking On The Best:
Utah is looking for its first win against a ranked opponent this season. The Utes lost a 4-0 decision to then-No. 15/21 Washington and took a 13-0 defeat against No. 21/18 Nevada last Friday.
Scouting the Competition:
The Utes will face a pair of opponents in five games this weekend at the Wildcat Invitational ...
North Dakota State (5-0): The Bison went 5-0 this weekend at the Southeast Louisiana Lion Classic, with wins over Jackson State (25-1), Southeast Louisiana (5-1), Grambling State (3-2), Tenn.-Martin (5-1) and Belmont (9-8).
No. 11/11 Arizona (7-2): The Wildcats enter the event on a six-game winning streak, starting with a 7-2 win over Nevada on Feb. 7 then continuing with a five-game sweep including two wins against South Florida, and one win against Marshall, Illinois and Hofstra. Host Arizona has a pair of players hitting over .400 through the Wildcats' first nine games. Left-handed outfielder Brittany Lastrapes leads the way with a .429 batting average, coming up with 15 hits in 35 at-bats. Lastrapes also posts a team-high .500 on-base percentage. Lauren Schutzler, another left-handed hitting outfielder, posts a .414 average. On the mound, a pair of starters have taken the ball for the Wildcats so far this season. Sarah Akamine is 4-0 with a 3.49 ERA through 28.1 innings. Akamine has pitched three complete games this year.
Foster Makes Assault On Utah's All-Time Home Run Chart:
Foster, Utah's starting center fielder, has hit four home runs this season and is now second in school history with 39 home runs. Melissa Stahnke holds the school record with 49 career home runs from 2001 to 2004.
Utah's Career Home Run Leaders:
1. Melissa Stahnke (2001-04) 49
2. Kara Foster (2007-present) 39
3. Cyndee Bennett (1994-97) 37
4. Lyndsey Trevis (1999-2002) 33
Sunny Smith (1997-2000) 33
5. Niki Hayhurst (2000-03) 32
Clean-Fielding Utes:
Utah has committed only seven errors in the first 10 games of the season. All together, the Utes own a .974 fielding percentage, compared to just .926 for their opponents.
Palmer Gets First Win As Ute:
Lindsey Palmer (Stansbury Park, Utah) threw her first career complete game in Saturday's 6-4 victory against Cal-State Fullerton, allowing four runs on six hits while striking out three and walking one. She also recorded the first win of her career and is now 1-0 this season.
Fonoti Displays Power Against CSF:
Fonoti's three-run home run to right-center field was her first of the season and gave the Utes a 6-2 advantage against Cal-State Fullerton in the bottom of the fifth inning. Fonoti went 1-for-3 with three RBI against the Titans. The home run for Fonoti was the 10th of her career.
Versatile Utes:
Entering this season, three veteran Ute players have switched positions this season. Hemingway moved from shortstop to second base during 2008 and will now play first base in 2009. Foster was stationed at first base during the 2007 and 2008 seasons and will now play center field, while Boardman moves from third base to right field. Fonoti, a shortstop, is the only starting infielder returning to the spot she played in 2008.
Hogue's Thoughts:
Utah's second-year head coach Amy Hogue offers her thoughts on last weekend at the Louisville Slugger Classic:
On Holm's grand slam against Portland State: "They gave [Holm] a mistake. They gave her a pitch to hit and she hit it hard."
On team's play after the Nevada game: "We came through with the timely hitting we needed. When we needed a big hit, we got one. This game is about pitching, defense, and timely hitting and we got that in the second game [of the day]."
