COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Utah freshman third baseman Whitney Holm and junior pitcher Ashley Smuda both earned Mountain West Conference Weekly awards following a 4-1 performance at the Louisville Slugger Classic in Las Vegas, Nev., the conference announced.
Holm, a native of Spanish Fork, Utah, earned her first career conference player of the week honor by going 6-for-15 (.400) in five games. The freshman drove in seven runs, including a pair of home runs. Against Portland State, Holm hit the first grand slam of her career to give Utah a 5-1 cushion over the Vikings. She then hit a solo homer over the left field wall for the first score in the top of the third of Utah's 2-0 shutout of Oregon State. She was the only Ute with multiple hits vs. Cal State Fullerton, going 2-for-3 with a pair of singles and an RBI. In Utah's 4-3 win against UC Davis, Holm slapped a single to left field, scoring all three Ute base runners after an Aggie fielding error. She currently leads her squad with five home runs this season, while maintaining a flawless fielding percentage (1.000) on third base.
Smuda, a Scottsdale, Ariz. native, earned wins in three of the Utes' four victories last weekend to extend her 2009 record to a perfect 6-0. On Friday, the junior allowed one run against Portland State while striking out two with three walks. On Saturday, she threw her first complete game shutout of the season with a seven-inning, four-hit effort vs. Oregon State that also featured two walks and a strikeout. The game marked Smuda's fourth shutout of her collegiate career and 22nd complete game. On Sunday, Smuda came in to pitch 1.2 innings against UC Davis, earning the win after facing six batters and not allowing a single run or hit. She sent the Aggies down in order in the seventh inning to close out the comeback 4-3 victory.
This is the third career pitcher of the week award for Smuda, who earned the honor back on April 15 and 29, 2008.
The Utes (7-3) take their four-game win streak to the Wildcat Invitational, beginning against North Dakota State Friday at 1:30 p.m., then against No. 11 Arizona at 6:30 p.m.
