SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah track and field team will have their final indoor track meet this weekend before the season culminates at the Mountain West Conference meet on Feb. 26-28. The team will be competing in Ogden, Utah for the Wildcat Tune-Up, hosted by Weber State University.
Only the throwers will be competing on Thursday, with all other events being held on Saturday. Eight athletes will be competing in the shot put and seven will be highlighted in the weight throw.
Conference opponents BYU and Air Force will also be attending the Wildcat Tune-Up this week, giving Utah an opportunity to size them up before the MWC Championship.
SCOUTING THE UTES
Chasity Toilolo currently ranks third on Utah's all-time indoor performance list in the shot put (46'3.25") and will look to continue her improvement in preparation for the conference meet.
In the weight throw, Sarah Grimm ranks seventh on Utah's all-time indoor list in the weight throw (57'5.5") and Josefin Berg hit her season best in the weight throw 55' 2" at the Husky Classic last weekend.
On Saturday the Utes will be represented by Whitney Wellington in the 55-meter sprint and by Chelsey Kaplar in the 55-meter hurdles. Carly Selleck will be competing in the 800-meter run and the mile-run.
The high jump will feature Langley Iverson, Brianna LeRoy, and Mandi Witherspoon. Haley McAllister-Birkeland will be representing Utah in the long jump in addition to the 55-meter sprint. Ashley Patterson will return to the triple jump on Saturday.
Freshaman Klaudia Rokossa will be competing in the pole vault along with teammates Laryssa Simpson and Aimee Nay.
LAST TIME OUT
At Iowa State, Endersen won the non-seeded 5,000-meter race with a time of 17:20.06 and helped Kellie Anderson to a second-place finish and a new personal best of 17:26.18. In the 3,000-meter race, Anderson ran the all-time 10th best time in the school's history, finishing in 10:01.25.
In the Pole Vault, Simpson improved her lifetime best to 11' 7.75", which is the 8th-best vault on Utah's all-time list.
In the non-seeded mile-run Janett Ern was second with a new personal best time of 5:06.54. Iverson continues to improve in the high-jump with a new collegiate best jump of 5' 7.25" for a sixth-place finish. Lucy Yates improved her collegiate best time once again in the 800-meter run to a time of 2:10.44, which is third in the school's history.
Shapard ran her 800-meter race in the Husky Classic at the University of Washington to an impressive heat-winning lifetime best and an all-time second best time in school history, 2:10.39.
Grimm was fifth in the weight throw throwing five times over her previous lifetime best. Her new personal record of 57' 5.5" is now seventh on the all-time list. Berg was ninth in the weight throw with a season best of 55' 2".
Utah's 4x400-meter relay team finished fourth with a time of 3:48.12. Runners on the team were Shapard, Kaplar, Patterson and Wellington.
