SAN DIEGO - Senior first baseman Staci Hemingway went 2-for-2 at the plate and hit the Utes' first triple of the season, but the University of Utah softball team was shut out 2-0 by Oregon in the final game of the San Diego Classic Sunday morning at the San Diego State Softball Field.
After drawing a two-out walk in the first inning, Hemingway hit a triple in the fourth inning then slapped a single to shortstop in the sixth inning. The West Valley, Utah native is now hitting .250 and has five RBI this season.
Sophomore Brittany Parker started for the Utes and threw three innings, allowing one earned run on five hits with one strikeout and one walk. Junior Lindsey Palmer came on in relief and shut out the Ducks for the final three innings. The Stansbury Park, Utah native faced 10 Oregon hitters and did not allow a single run or hit, while striking out three and walking two.
The Ducks took the lead early when their first two hitters of the game got on base with bunt singles and a Ute throwing error on a ball hit by Monique Fuiava pushed Neena Bryant across the plate for the first run of the game. The Utes got out of the inning when Parker struck Carlyn Re out looking then Kelsey Chambers hit a ground ball to third base where Holm was able to cut Sari-Jane Jenkins down at the plate. Cortney Kivett's ground ball to second base ended Oregon's threat.
Fuiava hit a third-inning solo home run to left field for Oregon's second and final tally of the contest.
Hemingway responded by hitting a one-out triple in the top of the fourth inning, but unfortunately, the Ducks got a strikeout and a fly-out to hold the Utes scoreless. Hemingway's hit was the first triple for the Utes this season and the second of her career.
Tia Palauni got a one-out single in the fifth inning then advanced to second base with her second steal of the season and is now 2-for-2 on stolen base attempts thus year. Palauni took third after a strikeout pitch was dropped by the Oregon catcher, but the Utes could not come up with the clutch hit drive her in.
Oregon starter Mikayla Endicott pitched a complete-game five-hit shutout to help the Ducks improve to 7-11 this season.
The Utes dropped to 8-12 overall after a 1-4 performance the San Diego Classic, and have suffered losses in nine of their last 10 outings.
Utah heads to College Station, Texas for the Aggie Invitational Mar. 6-8. The Utes open the event Friday against Kent State at 12:15 p.m. CT, then takes on Texas A&M at 5:15 p.m. CT.
