The Utah baseball team plays its first Mountain West Conference series and first home game of the year against Brigham Young, beginning on March 12 at 3:00 p.m. Utah will play the first game of the series at Franklin Covey Field while the final two games will be in Provo at Miller Park. Both of those games will be televised on BYU TV. Audio will be available for all three games on UtahUtes.com.
"It seems really early to be starting conference play but I feel like with 12 games under our belt we are closer to understanding our roles and getting up to the speed of the game," Utah head coach Bill Kinneberg said. "The whole conference is off to a great start with TCU, San Diego State, New Mexico and UNLV all winning some good games. We have five teams in the top 100 in the RPI right now. It doesn't get any easier than it was this past weekend."
Last Time Out
Utah went 2-2 over a four game stretch, beginning with a 5-4 win over Sam Houston State before going 1-2 in three games against No. 4 Texas A&M.
Against Sam Houston State, Devin Walker hit a grand slam in the sixth inning to lift the Utes to victory. Brian Budrow earned the win on the mound, pitching five scoreless innings.
After falling in the first game of the Texas A&M series, 7-2, the Utes rebounded in game two with their first shutout of the year, 2-0. Jordan Whatcott went six innings and allowed just two hits in the win, while Corey Shimada went 2-for-4 and scored both runs.
Game three saw Utah fall in a heartbreaking 12-11 loss. Down 10-6 in the ninth inning, Utah rallied to score five runs in the top of the ninth before A&M scored the game tying and game winning runs after a pair of bases loaded walks.
"We came down here and played well," Kinneberg said. "We are ready for conference play now. We have seen good pitching and hitting and are ready for the challenge that lies ahead."
Scouting Brigham Young
BYU is riding a five-game winning streak, which includes wins over Southern Utah (8-3), Wichita State (3-1) and a three-game sweep of St. John's. The Cougars are 8-6 on the year.
Deseret First Duel
The winner of each game between BYU and Utah earns five points in the Deseret First Duel rivalry series between Utah and BYU. Each of the six games that the two teams play is worth 1.5 points.
Utah has already clinched a victory for the 2008-09 season with a 34-13 lead of the 65.5-point series. At least 33 points are needed to win the series.
The rivalry series includes competition in the 12 sports the two universities compete in head-to-head during regular-season play. The Deseret First Duel will use a system that awards points to the winner of each head-to-head competition. Points won by the individual sports will count toward each school's overall total.
The Utah vs. BYU rivalry is one of the oldest and strongest in the country. In November 2005, the Wall Street Journal rated the rivalry the fourth best in college athletics.
