HONOLULU, Hawaii - Junior center fielder Kara Foster and senior first baseman Staci Hemingway both went 2-for-3, but the University of Utah softball team dropped a 5-0 decision Thursday against the Radford Highlanders in its third game of the Chevron Spring Fling at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
Utah (10-18) got four hits as a team, two each from Foster and Hemingway. Foster hit a double in the first inning then came up with a single in the sixth. After grounding out to third base in the first inning, Hemingway hit a single up the middle in the fourth inning then came up with another base hit in the sixth frame.
Junior right-hander Ashley Smuda threw her fourth complete game of the season, going seven innings and allowing four earned runs on eight hits after facing 33 batters on the day. The Scottsdale, Ariz., native fell to 7-6 this season.
Utah Sophomore catcher Brooke Olson led off the first inning with a walk for Utah then Foster doubled to center field to advance Olson to third base. Unfortunately, the Utes recorded three consecutive outs and could not score Olson.
Radford got on the board first when Sarah Himan plated an unearned run in their fourth-inning at-bat.
Hemingway got on base in the fourth inning with a single up the middle then stole second base for her third swipe of the season. Freshman third baseman Whitney Holm then hit a fly ball to right field to advance Hemingway to third base. Unfortunately, the Highlanders got a groundout from the next Ute hitter.
Radford got a three-run home run from Nichole Beall in the fifth inning to pad its lead.
Foster and Hemingway started the sixth inning with back-to-back singles, but RU forced Utah to ground into a double play to end the Ute threat.
The Highlanders tacked on their final run of the game with a solo home run by Himan over the left-field fence.
Radford improved to 11-3 overall, while Highlander pitcher Rebecca Whalley improved to 1-1 on the mound.
Utah continues its Chevron Spring Fling schedule against St. Johns (9 a.m. HT) and Wisconsin (11 a.m. HT) Friday at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
