LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The Mountain West Conference regular-season co-champion and No. 2 seed University of Utah men's basketball team (22-9) takes on No. 6 seed Wyoming (19-12) in the semifinals of the 2009 Conoco Mountain West Conference Basketball Championship Friday. Tipoff is slated for 8:30 p.m. PT at the Thomas & Mack Center and the game will be simulcast live by The Mtn. and CBS College Sports.
Utah reached the semifinals via a 61-58 victory over No. 7 TCU as senior guard Lawrence Borha (Staten Island, N.Y.) buried a three-pointer with 0.8 seconds remaining in the game. The Utes were led by senior forward Shaun Green (Salt Lake City), who scored 14 points on a 4-of-8 effort from three-point range while also knocking down two free throws.
Borha and senior center Luke Nevill (Perth, Australia) each scored 10 points in the contest. Borha was also the Utes' leading rebounder with a season-high seven boards. Two early fouls kept Nevill out of most the first half and off the scoreboard until there was just over 10 minutes remaining in the game. He finished 1-of-2 from the field and a perfect 8-of-8 at the free throw line.
The Utah win gave head coach Jim Boylen his 40th career win and a second MWC semifinals appearance in as many years at the helm for the Utes.
Wyoming punched its semifinals ticket with a 75-67 quarterfinal upset of No. 3 seed New Mexico. Senior guard Brandon Ewing led the Cowboys with 20 points on 4-of-9 from the field and 8-of-8 from the free throw line. Five Wyoming players finished in double figures as New Mexico fell in the No. 3 vs. No. 6 game for the second straight year.
Utah leads the all-time series against Wyoming, including a sweep of this year's regular-season games. The Utes topped the Cowboys in Salt Lake City in the conference-opener, 91-67. Utah followed up with an 80-70 victory in Laramie on Feb. 7.
Wyoming holds a 3-2 edge all-time in neutral-site games. The Utes and Cowboys have met in conference tournament play four times, but only once as members of the MWC. Wyoming won that contest, 60-47, in Denver, Colo., in 2006.
They faced off three other times in the WAC tournament, once at a neutral site (Albuquerque, N.M.) and once each on their respective home floors. Utah was victorious in both of the partisan contests, but lost the neutral site game.
Wyoming's leading scorer is Ewing, who also tops the MWC with 18.6 ppg. Senior forward Tyson Johnson is their leading rebounder at 7.6 boards per contest. Head coach Heath Schroyer is now 31-30 in two seasons at the helm for the Cowboys.
