Chevron Spring Fling Review: Utah compiled a 2-3 record last week at the Chevron Spring Fling, and left Honolulu with a two-game win streak.
Memphis Recap: The Utes outhit Memphis 8-5, but unfortunately committed three errors in a 5-1 loss, while Memphis did not have a single error in the field. Whitney Holm (Spanish Fork, Utah) drove in Utah's run, while junior center fielder Kara Foster (Derby, Kan.) and senior right fielder Angie Boardman (Spokane, Wash.) both came up with multiple-hit-efforts by going 2-for-3 at the plate.
Hawaii Recap: Brittany Parker (Murray, Utah) got the start and pitched 3.2 innings, allowing only one earned run on one hit, while striking out five and walking six in the Utes' 1-0 loss. Lindsey Palmer (Stansbury Park, Utah) pitched the final 2.1 innings, striking out two with one walk. The teams came up with one hit apiece. Boardman hit a single up the middle of the Hawaii defense in the third inning. Hawaii scored the only run of the game in the fourth.
Radford Recap: Utah got four hits as a team in a 5-0 loss to Radford, two each from Foster and Staci Hemingway (West Valley, Utah). Foster hit a double in the first inning, then came up with a single in the sixth. Hemingway hit a single up the middle in the fourth inning, then came up with another base hit in the sixth frame. Ashley Smuda (Scottsdale, Ariz.) threw her fourth complete game of the season, going seven innings and allowing four earned runs on eight hits after facing 33 batters on the day. Radford got on the board first when Sarah Himan plated an unearned run in the fourth inning.
St. John's Recap: Hemingway drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning as the Utes claimed a 2-1 win over the Red Storm. Utah was tied with St. John's 1-1 heading into the sixth inning when sophomore Brooke Olson (Bluffdale, Utah) recorded a swinging strikeout, but reached base after a passed ball. After a Ute strikeout, Hemingway came through in the clutch with a two-out double to left field to push Olson across the plate for the game-winning run. Hemingway now has 11 RBI.
Wisconsin Recap: Foster slammed a two-run home run over the center-field fence in the sixth inning to give Utah a 2-1 victory over Wisconsin in the second game of the day. Parker got the start and pitched 4.1 innings and did not allow an earned run on four hits while striking out one. Smuda took the mound for the final 2.2 innings to take her eighth win of the season. Smuda improved her record to 8-6 this season with a 3.96 ERA.
No. 9/11 California Recap: Utah's game with No. 9/11 California was cancelled due to inclement weather.
Palmer Strikes Out 11 against St. John's: Palmer struck out 11 Red Storm hitters in only five innings during Friday's 2-1 win over St. John's. Palmer only allowed one earned run on six hits in a no-decision performance. Five of the first six outs Palmer recorded were strikeouts. Palmer struck out the side in the first inning and got her fourth strikeout as Stacia Dopudja went down looking to lead off the second inning. Shauntaine Harris struck out swinging for the final out of the frame.
Scouting the Competition:
Boise State (12-8): The Bronocos have won seven of their last eight games, but are 5-7 away from the friendly confines of the Mountain Cove. Christina Capobianco leads BSU with a .426 batting average through their first 20 games. She also posts team highs with 20 RBI, six home runs and a .796 slugging percentage. Aubray Zell is 8-2 on the season with a 2.39 ERA in 58.2 innings pitched.
Utes at Home: Utah went 3-8 at Ute Softball Field in 2008 during its first season under head coach Amy Hogue.
Utah Thefts: Hemingway stole a team-high three bases last week at the Chevron Spring Fling with one each against Memphis, Radford, and St. John's.
Foster Climbs Utah's All-Time Home Run Chart: Foster led the Utah offense with a two-run game-winning home run in a 2-1 victory over Wisconsin on Friday. She leads the Utes with 12 round-trippers and 23 RBI this season. Foster is now just three home runs away from passing Melissa Stahnke (2001-04) for the school record. Foster has hit 47 home runs in her career. Foster hit two home runs on Mar. 7 against Stephen F. Austin and then-No. 17 Texas A&M, one each against both Stephen F. Austin and No. 17 Texas A&M. As of last week, Foster led the Mountain West Conference in runs, home runs, ranked second in slugging percentage, and was third in RBI, and seventh in hits.

Utes Dig the Long Ball: Utah leads the Mountain West Conference with 27 home runs. Seven different Utes have notched round-trippers this year, led by Foster (12), followed by Holm (7), Boardman (3), Hemingway (2), Sharee Fonoti (Ewa Beach, Hawaii) (1), Jasey Jensen (Layton, Utah) (1), and Bonnie Muir (West Jordan, Utah) (1).
Hemingway Nominated for Lowe's Senior CLASS Award: Hemingway is one of 30 national candidates for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award in softball. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in these areas: classroom, character, community, and competition. The list will be narrowed down to 10 finalists midway through the regular season on the official ballot.
