Utah continues season at Aggie Invitational:
The University of Utah softball team looks to break out of its nine-of-10-game losing stretch this weekend at the Aggie Invitational in College Station, Texas. The Utes face Kent State Friday at 12:15 p.m. CT, then the home-standing No. 17 Aggies at 5:15 p.m. CT. Utah starts Saturday's action against Stephen F. Austin at 12:15 p.m. CT, then Texas A&M at 5:15 p.m. CT. The Utes wrap up the event at 10 a.m. CT Sunday against Kent State.
San Diego Classic review:
No. 3/4 UCLA Recap: In the first game Friday, the Utes lost a 7-1 decision to No. 3/4 UCLA. Foster hit a two-out solo home run in the sixth inning to get Utah on the board, but the Utes could not avoid a 7-1 loss. Foster leads the team with seven home runs this year. She is seven away from tying Melissa Stahnke (2001-04) for the Utah school record.
Santa Clara Recap: Utah earned its eighth win of the season with a 2-1 victory over Santa Clara in the second game Friday. Freshman Joni Cook (Eagle, Idaho) earned her first win of the season with a seven-inning complete game that saw her face 25 batters. Cook did not allow an earned run and gave up three hits with only one walk and three strikeouts. At the plate, junior center fielder Kara Foster (Derby, Kan.) went 2-for-5 in the two games with a pair of RBI on two extra-base hits. Foster is now second on the team with 12 RBI this year.
UC Davis Recap: In the Utes' first extra-inning game of the season, Cook gave up just four hits and an earned run in 8.1 innings. She faced 32 hitters and struck out six UC Davis batters while walking three. The Aggies managed four singles in the first eight innings against the Ute pitching staff. Two Utes reached base in the game with senior first baseman Staci Hemingway (West Valley, Utah) drawing a walk in the fourth inning. Freshman catcher Brooke Olson (Bluffdale, Utah) got Utah's lone hit with a single in the sixth.
San Diego Recap: Utah got on the board first in the second game of the day against the home-standing Toreros. After Foster drew a leadoff walk in the first inning, Hemingway came up with a clutch double to left field to drive in Foster for Utah's first run of the day. The Utes put together a seventh-inning rally to pull within one run at 3-2, when shortstop Sharee Fonoti (Ewa Beach, Hawaii) hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Olson. Unfortunately, the Utes could not come up with the game-tying run.
Oregon Recap: Hemingway went 2-for-2 at the plate and hit the Utes' first triple of the season, but Utah was shut out 2-0 by Oregon in the final game of the San Diego Classic Sunday morning. After drawing a two-out walk in the first inning, Hemingway hit a triple in the fourth inning then slapped a single to shortstop in the sixth inning. She is now hitting .250 and has five RBI this season. Junior Lindsey Palmer (Stansbury Park, Utah) came on in relief and shut out the Ducks for the final three innings. She faced 10 Oregon hitters and did not allow a single run or hit, while striking out three and walking two.
Gregory returns to alma mater:
Utah assistant coach Adrian Gregory was a four-year starter for Texas A&M, playing shortstop, second base and outfield from 2002 to 2005. She had a career batting average of .284 with 197 hits, 29 home runs and 37 stolen bases and served as a team captain as a junior and senior. Gregory led the Aggies to a Big XII regular-season title and an NCAA Super Regional appearance as a senior. During her junior season, Gregory was a first-team All-Big XII selection and was named to the NFCA All-Region team. Gregory coached and played under former Utah head coach Jo Evans. The Livingston, Texas, native, Gregory began her coaching career as a student assistant for Texas A&M in 2006, helping the Aggies to a 34-19 overall record en route to an NCAA Regional appearance.
Taking on the best:
Utah is looking for its first win against a ranked opponent this season. The Utes dropped a 7-1 decision to No. 3/4 UCLA last Friday at the San Diego Classic. In addition to three road losses at then-No. 11 Arizona, they also lost a 4-0 decision to then-No. 15/21 Washington and took a 13-0 defeat against No. 21/18 Nevada.
Hammerin' Utes:
The Utes rank second in the Mountain West Conference with 18 home runs this season. Foster leads the squad with seven round-trippers this year. Freshman third baseman Whitney Holm (Spanish Fork, Utah) is second on the Utes with five home runs, while Angie Boardman (Spokane, Wash.) has hit a pair. Hemingway, Fonoti, and Bonnie Muir (West Jordan, Utah) each have hit one apiece.
Foster climbs Utah's all-time home run chart:
Foster, Utah's starting center fielder, has hit seven home runs this season and is now second in school history with 42 home runs. Melissa Stahnke holds the school record with 49 career home runs from 2001 to 2004.
Utah's Career Home Run Leaders:
1. Melissa Stahnke (2001-04) 49
2. Kara Foster (2007-present) 42
3. Cyndee Bennett (1994-97) 37
4. Lyndsey Trevis (1999-2002) 33

Scouting the competition:
Kent State (5-5): After starting their season 5-1, the Golden Flashes enter this weekend on a four-game losing streak. Each of Kent State's games at the Golden Corral Classic on Feb. 28-March 1 were canceled due to rain. In their last outing, Maria Conti smashed a pinch hit homer in the seventh, but it was Kent State's only hit in a 2-1 loss to Illinois State on Feb. 15 at the Littlewood Classic in Tempe, Ariz. Junior right-hander Kylie Reynolds earned the Mid-American Conference's East Division Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 10. Reynolds tossed three complete-game shutouts at the Stetson Leadoff Classic.
No. 17 Texas A&M (13-8): Texas A&M's 13-8 overall mark this season includes a 6-2 mark at the Aggie Softball Complex. The Aggies beat Arizona twice last weekend and used a three-run seventh inning then scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth for the second win on Sunday. On Friday, the Aggies snapped the Wildcats' 12-game winning streak on Friday with a 6-5, nine-inning win. Arizona's lone win of the set came in a 9-4 result on Saturday. Holly Ridley hit .625 on the weekend with 10 hits, including five doubles and two home runs, and eight RBIs. Starter Rhiannon Kliesing went 3-0, picking up two wins against Arizona while striking out 23 in 24 innings pitched.
