COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Utah junior Rick Cornu has been named the Mountain West Conference Player of the Week, it was announced today by the conference office.
Cornu, from Fallon, Nev., batted .444 (8-for-18) from the plate, with three home runs, one double, six runs scored and 12 RBI, as the Utes went 3-1 at Cal State Bakersfield last weekend. In the 12-1 series-opening win, Cornu went 3-for-4 with a three-run homer, five RBI and two runs scored. In a 10-8 loss in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader split, he went 2-for-4 with two more home runs, four RBI and two runs scored. In the Utes' 10-8 win in the second game of the doubleheader, he went 3-for-5 with an RBI double and two more runs scored. He also drew a bases-loaded walk in the top of the ninth to bring home the eventual game-winning run for Utah.
Cornu is leading Utah at the plate with a .389 batting average in eight starts. He leads the team in RBI (15), runs (nine), slugging percentage (.722), home runs (three), and total bases (26).
