TEMPE, ARIZ. - The University of Utah track and field team finished competition late on Saturday evening at the Arizona State Invitational. At the end of the two-day competition, Utah had three athletes earn regional qualifying marks.
"We had solid performances across the board for our first outdoor meet. I am proud of our regional qualifiers and of Brianna [LeRoy] for qualifying for the Junior National Championships," said head coach Kyle Kepler. "I am looking forward to the improvements we'll be making in preparation for our upcoming meets."
On Friday, Josefin Berg and Sarah Grimm had qualifying marks in the hammer throw with 192'5" (third-place) and 183'3" (sixth-place), respectively.
On Saturday, Chelsea Shapard competed in the 400-meter hurdles for third-place with a time of 1:00.38, an NCAA regional qualifying mark. Her time ranks fifth on Utah's outdoor all-time performance list. Chelsey Kaplar also competed in the hurdles, earning fifth-place overall with a time of 1:02.15, missing the region qualifying mark by two seconds.
Kaplar and Brianna LeRoy competed in the 100-meter hurdles. Kaplar placed fifth out of 16 competitors with a time of 14.94, while LeRoy finished in 15.46 for ninth-place.
Haley McAllister-Birkeland had a ninth-place finish in the long jump finals with an 18'4.5" mark, in the preliminaries she had a 17'11.75" jump for eighth-place out of 20 competitors.
In the high jump, Langley Iverson tied for eighth-place with a 5'5" mark. Laryssa Simpson and Klaudia Rokossa competed in the pole vault for a 15th-place (11'1.75") and 13th-place (11'7.75"), respectively.
Ashley Patterson competed in the 200-meter dash and 400-meter dash on Saturday. The Ute finished in 25.34 in the 200-meter dash to earn 15th-place out of 37 competitors. She finished in seventh-place in the 400-meter dash with a time of 57.54.
