SALT LAKE CITY - Utah baseball player Corey Shimada has been named the Mountain West Conference Player of the Week for March 30, the conference office announced today.
Shimada, from Murray, Utah, hit .533 (8-for-15) from the plate, with eight RBI, as Utah went a combined 3-1 vs. Gonzaga and Southern Utah last week. In a 16-9 win in game one of a two-game series at Gonzaga, Shimada went 3-for-5 from the plate with three RBI. He followed with a 1-for-3 performance in a 3-2 loss in game two. In the first game of Saturday's doubleheader vs. Southern Utah, Shimada went 3-for-5 with three RBI in Utah's 11-3 victory. In game two, he smacked a second-inning two-run single to give the Utes the lead on the way to a 3-2 win. Defensively, Shimada had six putouts and 14 assists with no errors from his second base position.
Shimada is hitting .322 for the season with a team-high eight stolen bases. He also has 18 RBI for the year. It is Shimada's first career player of the week award.
The Utes next game is on Tuesday, March 31, against Utah Valley University at Franklin Covey Field.
