New Mexico/Colorado State Game Notes ![]()
The University of Utah softball team opens its Mountain West Conference schedule with three road games this weekend. The Utes start their conference slate at New Mexico Thursday at 7 p.m. in Albuquerque, N.M. Utah will then travel to Fort Collins, Colo., to face Colorado State Friday at 3 p.m., and Saturday at 1 p.m. The Utes have won three of their last four games and sport a 13-19 overall record after splitting a doubleheader with Boise State on Mar. 18.
Changing it Up: Due to unplayable field conditions at Ute Softball Field, Utah postponed its home games last week against Utah State and Utah Valley. The Utes will now host Utah State in a single game at 4 p.m. on Monday, April 6 and will host Utah Valley in a doubleheader at noon on Sunday, April 26.
Boise State Review: Utah split its home-opening doubleheader with the Broncos. After winning the first game, 1-0, the Utes dropped the second by a 7-5 score on Mar. 18. Senior centerfielder Angie Boardman (Spokane, Wash.) led the way offensively with a 5-for-7 effort at the plate on the day while driving in a run with an RBI double. Sophomore Brooke Olson (Bluffdale, Utah) went 3-for-6 in the two games, scoring two runs and stealing a base.
Smuda Tosses Third Career No-Hitter: Junior right-hander Ashley Smuda (Scottsdale, Ariz.) pitched her third-career no-hitter to lead Utah to a 1-0 victory over Boise State. On the mound for Utah in game one, Smuda did not allow a hit while striking out four and walking one in seven innings as she faced 22 Boise State batters. Smuda is just the second pitcher in school history to have thrown at least three no-hitters in her career. Ali (Andrus) Sagas holds the school record with six career no-hitters from 1994-97.
Playing it Close: Utah is 5-4 this season in games decided by one run. The Utes' last three victories have all come in one-run affairs.
Quick-starting Utes: Utah has scored first in 11 of its 13 victories this season. The Utes are 11-3 this year when managing to score the first run of a contest. Conversely, when the opponents take the first lead of a game, the Utes own a 2-16 mark.
Foster Bids to Become Utah's All-time Home Run Leader: Kara Foster (Derby, Kan.) provided all of the Utah offense with a two-run game-winning home run in a 2-1 victory over Wisconsin on March 13. She leads the Utes with 12 round-trippers and 23 RBI this season. Foster is now just three home runs away from passing Melissa Stahnke (2001-04) for the school record. Foster has hit 47 home runs in her career to lead the MWC, is tied for second in runs, ranks third in slugging percentage, fourth in RBI, and is tied for sixth in hits.
Utes in the Mountain: Utah finished third in the MWC after going 10-10 last season in league play in its first season under head coach Amy Hogue. The Utes own an all-time record of 304-193-1 in conference play, good for a .611 winning percentage.
Utes Fourth in MWC Preseason Poll: Utah was tabbed fourth in the 2009 MWC Preseason Poll, the conference office announced Jan. 28. The Utes tallied 14 points in the voting, picked to finish sixth in last season's voting before placing third in 2009. CSU followed in fifth place, while New Mexico was fourth.
On a Roll: Freshman third baseman Whitney Holm (Spanish Fork, Utah) is currently enjoying a team-high four-game hit streak. Three other Ute players have also recorded four-game hit streaks this year.
Utah Goes Long: Utah is second in the Mountain West Conference with 28 home runs. Seven different Utes have notched round-trippers this year, led by Foster (12), followed by Holm (7), Boardman (3), Staci Hemingway (West Valley, Utah) (2), Sharee Fonoti (Ewa Beach, Hawaii) (1), Jasey Jensen (Layton, Utah) (1), Bonnie Muir (West Jordan, Utah) (1) and Hannah Clements (Poway, Calif.) (1).
Last Time at New Mexico: Despite a pair of home runs from Foster, Utah was swept in a doubleheader by New Mexico, 6-2 and 9-1, in its last trip to Albuquerque, N.M., May 8, 2008. A pair of home runs in the fifth inning gave New Mexico a 6-1 lead in game one that the Utes could not overcome. In the second contest of the day, New Mexico scored four runs in the second inning before Foster's second home run of the day in the top of the fifth cut the deficit to 4-1. That was the fourth consecutive conference game in which Foster homered.
Last Time at Colorado State: Utah lost a pair of games, 7-5 and 7-1, during its last trip to Fort Collins, Colo., May 9-10, 2008. In the first game, Utah took a 1-0 lead in the first inning off an RBI single from Devina Quintero. Unfortunately, the Rams scored all seven of their runs in the second inning, which included a grand slam home run by Lauren Cusick. Utah responded by putting together a late-inning rally with three runs in the fourth frame and scored their fifth run in the fifth inning but could not avoid the loss. Utah's lone run in the second game came in the top of the second inning. Fonoti walked to lead off the inning, scoring when Hemingway singled up the middle. The Rams broke a 1-1 tie in the fourth inning.
Scouting the Competition:
New Mexico (9-23): The Lobos have lost 11 straight games and 15 of their last 16. UNM was swept at home by Texas State last weekend (8-4, 4-1, 9-8). New Mexico is led by senior Samantha Hughes, who is hitting .400 this season.
Colorado State (13-15): The Rams' home-opening doubleheader against Northern Colorado last Sunday was cancelled. CSU opens its MWC slate Thursday against BYU at Ram Field. Caitlan Stem is hitting .351 this year and boasts a .505 slugging percentage.
