Shimada Named MWC Player of the Week
SALT LAKE CITY - The Ute baseball team stays in Utah for its mid-week contest, traveling to Orem to face Utah Valley at 6:00 p.m. The game was scheduled to be played at Franklin Covey but will be moved to Utah Valley. The Utes will still be designated as the home team.
"Tuesday games are tough because your regular starting pitchers generally aren't playing and we are also in the middle of conference play so we have to make sure that we are ready to play mentally," head coach Bill Kinneberg said. "We need to continue to progress - play the game right, get guys at-bats, get innings pitched and continue to get better."
The Wolverines are 7-18 on the year and have lost four of their last five games. Their last win came against Nevada, 5-4, on March 28.
UVU is led by junior pitcher and third baseman Jace Brinkerhoff, who is hitting .394 on the season and leads all starters with 41 hits and 10 doubles. Shortstop Jake Rickenbach has also been strong for the Wolverines with a team-high 16 RBI and a .284 batting average.
Jory Jensen, the scheduled starter, is 2-2 on the year and leads Utah Valley with a 4.26 ERA.
The Utes are coming off a doubleheader sweep of Southern Utah on Saturday, March 28, winning game one 11-3 and the second game 3-2. Corey Shimada went .533 last week (8-for-15) to earn his first career Mountain West Conference Player of the Week honor.
"I am pleased with our effort this past weekend," Kinneberg said. "For the most part, we swung the bats well. We pitched good also, holding them to just five runs in two games."
