KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Utah first baseman Staci Hemingway is one of 30 candidates for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award in softball. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in these areas: classroom, character, community, and competition.
"[Hemingway] has had everyone's respect since she stepped foot on campus. People have looked up to her since she was a redshirt freshman," Utah head coach Amy Hogue said. "Every bit of Staci's softball ability is matched by her character."
Hemingway was unanimously elected as a team captain for the second consecutive season in 2009 and started 171 games in three different positions in Utah's infield during her first three seasons but has remained a pillar of stability for the Utes. Hemingway recorded hits in nine consecutive at bats from May 10-12, 2007, tying for the fourth-longest streak in NCAA history. She also ended 2007 season with an eight-game hitting streak. She also had a three-game hitting streak in Utah's 2006 NCAA Tournament appearance.
In the classroom, Hemingway completed her undergraduate studies and earned a B.S. in Sports Management and is currently pursuing an M.S. in Exercise and Sports Science. She was an ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District VII selection and Academic All-Mountain West Conference in 2008.
Off the field, Hemingway has frequently worked with three organizations in the community throughout her career at Utah. She participates in a volunteer program at Lincoln Elementary in Layton, Utah. She also helps children at Ronald McDonald House of Salt Lake City, and volunteers her time coaching an area little league softball team. Recently, Hemingway also participated in the Highland Park Elementary School's Red Ribbon Week and the Student-Athlete Mentors' Food Drive in the fall of 2008.
The list will be narrowed down to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will then be placed on the official ballot. The ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans. The award winner will be announced and recognized at the 2009 NCAA Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City.
