COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Three different Utes hit home runs as the University of Utah softball team defeated Kent State, 9-0, in the first game Friday at the Aggie Softball Complex. The Utes fell to 9-13 this season after dropping an 8-0 decision to host No. 17 Texas A&M in the second game of the day at the Aggie Invitational.
Utah 9, Kent State 0 (5 innings)
In the first game of the day against Kent State, Utah's bats came alive with nine runs on eight hits. Junior center fielder Kara Foster led the way with a 2-for-3 effort at the plate with three RBI and two runs scored. The Derby, Kan., native now has 43 career home runs, which is only six away from tying Melissa Stahnke (2001-04) for the school record (49). Foster leads the team with eight home runs this season.
Freshman third baseman Whitney Holm was 2-for-3 as well with two RBI and one run scored. The Spanish Fork, Utah, native is second on the squad with six home runs this season.
Three different Utes came up with home runs, including Foster, Holm and senior first baseman Staci Hemingway.
Utah's offense exploded with its highest production at the plate since 10-run games against Utah Valley and Utah State at the Red Desert Classic on Feb. 7 and 8.
Ashley Smuda faced 14 Golden Flash hitters and gave up two hits in four innings on the mound and struck out one. Lindsey Palmer finished the game for the Utes, allowing one hit, one hit while striking out two KSU batters. Smuda was credited with the win, her seventh this season. This was Utah's third shutout win of the season.
The Utes got off to a quick start as Foster led the game off in impressive fashion for the Utes, hitting a triple to right center field. With one out, Hemingway came to the plate and came up with her second home run of the season over the left-field wall off of Kent State pitcher Markie Pozzuto.
Holm earned Utah's next tally with a leadoff home run in the second inning off Pozzuto to give the Utes a three-run cushion.
The Utes put the game out of reach for the Golden Flash with a six-run fifth inning. Jasey Jensen started the frame by hitting the first double of her career to center field then Tia Palauni took first base after drawing walk. Foster cleared the bases with a three-run home run to right-center field. With one down and Hemingway on first base, Brittany Parker knocked her first extra-base hit of the season with a triple to left field for her first RBI of the year. Angie Boardman then hit an RBI single to plate Parker for Utah's fifth run of the inning. After Boardman took second base on a KSU wild pitch, Holm drove in Boardman with a single to right center for Utah's ninth and final run of the contest.
Kent State dropped to 5-7 on the year, while Pozzuto fell to 1-3 with the decision.
No. 17 Texas A&M 8, Utah 0 (5 innings)
The Utes were behind by only one run to the 17th-ranked Aggies heading into the bottom half of the fifth inning, behind 4.1 strong innings from freshman pitcher Joni Cook. The Eagle, Idaho native allowed just one run on seven hits through the first four innings but could not prevent a big inning by Texas A&M.
The home-standing Aggies managed seven runs on four hits to build an eight-run advantage after the fifth inning. Three of the first four Texas A&M batters reached base then Rhiannon Kliesing hit a two-run double to left field. Taryn Broussard followed that with a three-run home run over the left-center field fence to build a six-run advantage. The Aggies tallied the eighth run of the game when Schroeder plated an unearned run after a Ute error.
Cook fell to 1-7 this season, allowing five unearned runs on 10 hits while walking two and striking out two. Kliesing threw a five-inning complete-game one-hitter to improve to 11-4.
Holm registered the Utes only hit of the game with a single through the left side of the Aggie infield to lead off the fourth inning.
Utah continues play at the Aggie Invitational against Stephen F. Austin tomorrow at 12:15 p.m. CT. The Utes then take on No. 17 Texas A&M tomorrow at 5:15 p.m. CT.
