Ute Softball Travels to Hawaii for Chevron Spring Fling: Utah will head to Honolulu, Hawaii this week for six games at the Chevron Spring Fling. The Utes bring a 10-15 record into their final early-season tournament. Utah faces Memphis (3 p.m. HT) and Hawaii (7 p.m. HT) on Wednesday, then plays Radford on Thursday (11 a.m. HT). A 9 a.m. HT matchup against St. John's begins Friday's slate, followed by an 11 a.m. HT game against Wisconsin. The last game of the weekend pits Utah against No. 9/11 California at 11 a.m. HT.
Aggie Invitational Review: The Utes went 2-3 at last weekend's Aggie Invitational, picking up a pair of wins over Kent State and dropped decisions to No. 17 Texas A&M and Stephen F. Austin.
Lindsey Palmer (Stansbury Park, Utah) pitched a two-hit complete game shutout and center fielder Kara Foster (Derby, Kan.) tagged her 46th career home run as Utah defeated Kent State, 5-0, Sunday at the Aggie Softball Complex.
The Utes outhit No. 17 Texas A&M 14-10 on Saturday. Trailing 5-3, Utah came up with two clutch runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, but unfortunately fell 7-5 to the Aggies in eight innings.
In the first game Saturday, the Utes dropped a 3-2 decision to Stephen F. Austin. Foster led off the first inning with a solo home run, but SFA came back with a two-run home run to take a 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth inning when Kayla Gutkowski hit a two-run home run over the center field fence. Senior first baseman Staci Hemingway (West Valley, Utah) hit a two-out RBI single to score Bonnie Muir (West Jordan, Utah) and tie the contest at two runs apiece. Unfortunately, SFA came back with the game-winning run in the seventh frame.
The Utes were behind by only one run to the 17th-ranked Aggies heading into the bottom half of the fifth inning of Friday's matchup. Utah got 4.1 strong innings from freshman pitcher Joni Cook (Eagle, Idaho), who allowed just one run on seven hits through the first four innings, but could not prevent a seven-run fifth inning by Texas A&M to clinch the victory.
In the first game Friday against Kent State, Utah's bats came alive with nine runs on eight hits. Foster led the way with a 2-for-3 effort at the plate with three RBI and two runs scored. Freshman third baseman Whitney Holm (Spanish Fork, Utah) was 2-for-3 as well with two RBI and one run scored. Holm is second on the squad with six home runs this season. Three different Utes came up with home runs in the game, including Foster, Holm and Hemingway.
Palmer Shines Against Kent State: In her third start of the season Sunday against Kent State, Palmer pitched her first career complete-game shutout. She faced 25 KSU hitters and gave up just two hits to Golden Flash hitters with only one walk while striking out six. Kent State's Jessica Carmichael got a single with two outs in the first inning, and then Lauren Brocklehurst singled in the sixth to advance Leah Archural, the only Golden Flash base runner to reach second base the entire game. Palmer improved her record to 2-2 this season.
