SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah track and field team will be competing on Friday at the BYU Cougar Invitational in Provo, Utah. Pending weather conditions, the meet will be held at the Clarence F. Robison Outdoor Track on Friday. Competition is scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m. MT.
The one-day meet will include athletes from Southern Utah, Wyoming, Utah, Utah State, Utah Valley and Weber State.
"This meet gives us the opportunity to have our entire team compete because it is so close to home. It will give our younger kids a chance to compete and open their season and get some valuable experience," said head coach Kyle Kepler. "I hope to see some of our Ute supporters come down and cheer us on."
Last week the Utes had three athletes qualify for the NCAA Regional Championships. Josefin Berg and Sarah Grimm qualified in the hammer throw and Chelsea Shapard qualified in the 400-meter hurdles. Brianna LeRoy qualified for the U.S. Junior Nationals in the Heptathlon, which was contested in conjunction with the Arizona State Invitational at Mesa Junior College.
Berg placed third in the hammer throw with a lifetime second-best of 192' 5". Her mark ranks first in the Mountain West Conference, 11th nationally and third on Utah's all-time outdoor performance list. Grimm improved her lifetime best by 13 feet with a throw of 183' 3", which is sixth on the all-time list.
Shapard placed third in her qualifying race finishing in 1:00.38, which is her lifetime second-best. Shapard currently leads the league in the 400-meter hurdles, and her time ranks 20th nationally. LeRoy's point total of 4,275 in the heptathlon earned her ninth-place on the all-time list.
At the Stanford Invitational, Lauren Endersen competed in the 10,000-meter race. Her time of 35:40.06 is sixth on the all-time performance list and is an 18 second-improvement from her previous best mark. Lucy Yates' 800-meter time of 2:13.12 is tenth-best on the all-time performance list.
