SALT LAKE CITY - The senior athletes on the 2008 University of Utah cross country team and the current track and field team were honored on Monday night at the University's Annual Senior Banquet Dinner.
"This is the first group of athletes to be with us for four years. They have been very instrumental in building our program back towards a championship-level -- at all levels; conference and nationally," said head coach Kyle Kepler. "This is a very distinguished group of students, and on behalf of our coaching staff, it has been a privilege to coach them. We wish them the very best in their future and are always here for them."
Lauren Endersen garnered the prestigious James E. (Bud) Jack Academic Award for her academic achievements during her collegiate career at the University of Utah. The award is given out each year to a female student-athlete that had a lot of success in and out of the classroom.
Endersen is set to graduate in May with a cummulative 4.0 GPA and has already been accepted into medical school at Ohio State, which will commence in the fall. Endersen is currently the reigning Mountain West Conference Outdoor 10,000-meter champion (35:58.21).
Chelsea Shapard is currently ranked 18th in the nation and first in the conference in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 58.88. Last year, she set the school record in the event with a time of 58.07 and will look to break that record in the upcoming outdoor track and field meets.
In the hammer throw, Sarah Grimm leads the conference and is now nationally ranked No. 18 with a personal-best toss of 199' 0". Grimm has made improvements in her regional qualifying mark over the last few meets, hitting two impressive marks on the same day. She had a 187' 7" effort at the Sun Angel Track Classic and then seven hours later, had a mark of 194' 10".
Chelsea DiGrazia is currently ranked 62nd in the country in the 1,500-meter event with a time of 4:26.71 in the outdoor track and field season. She set her regional qualifying mark at the Sun Angel Track Classic on April 10-11.
Alyssa Abbott battled through an IT band injury throughout the cross country season, but qualified for the 2008 NCAA Cross Country Championships. She finished in 76th-place with a time of 21:00.5. She was the first runner since 2004 to compete in the prestigious event.
