PROVO, UTAH - The University of Utah track and field team competed in the one-day BYU Cougar Outdoor Invitational on Friday at the Clarence F. Robison Outdoor Track. The Utes finished with two event champions and nine top-five finishes despite the unfavorable weather conditions.
"This meet was both physically and mentally challenging with the less-than-desirable weather conditions," said head coach Kyle Kepler. "We tried to compete as hard as possible, but we have work to do. We will be addressing some of the problem areas this week in practice to get better and improve for our next meet."
In the hammer throw, Sarah Grimm and Josefin Berg were a one-two punch for Utah for the second week in a row. Grimm walked away event champion with a new lifetime best of 186' 7.25" and Berg came in second-place with a 184'4.25" mark.
Chasity Toilolo competed in the shot put for a third-place finish with a 42'0.25" toss, which ranks tenth on Utah's all-time outdoor performance list. In the discus event, the Ute placed fourth overall with a toss of 135'0.75". Candus Aiello also competed in the discus for a fifth-place finish and a mark of 134'6.25".
In the long jump, Haley McAllister-Birkeland had a lifetime second-best mark of 18'10.5" to be named event champion. Her time ranks sixth on Utah's all-time performance list.
In the 400-meter hurdles, Chelsey Kaplar finished in 1:02.90 for second-place overall. Her time ranks eighth on the all-time performance list. In the 200-meter dash, Whitney Wellington earned sixth-place overall with a finish time of 25.79.
Ashley Patterson competed in the 400-meter dash, finishing in 58.62 for seventh-place overall in the race. In the 800-meter run, Janett Ern finished in 2:22.69 to earn seventh-place overall.
In the 1500-meter run, Kellie Anderson finished in 4:55.89 for a sixth-place finish. Alexis Davis and Samantha Gaffney competed in the 5000-meter run for fifth and sixth-place finishes, respectively. Davis finished in 19:29.14 and Gaffney crossed the line at 19:34.43.
In the high jump, Mandi Witherspoon earned fourth-place with a 5'3" mark and Brianna LeRoy came in fifth-place with a 5'1" effort.
