SALT LAKE CITY - After the University of Utah track & field team earned three conference individual event titles en route to a fifth-place finish at the 2009 Mountain West Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships May 15-16, Josefin Berg, Sarah Grimm, Langley Iverson, Chelsea Shapard, and Utah's 4x400 relay team all garnered All-MWC honors.
Grimm, a junior from Sandy, Utah, won the MWC's hammer throw event with a throw of 197'7" to take the title by 3'4" over her teammate Berg. Berg, a senior from Osthammar, Sweden, finished as the runner-up with a mark of 193'3".
Freshman Langley Iverson came through for the Utes in the high jump, clearing 5' 8.75" for her first career conference crown as well as a new personal record and a new regional qualifying mark.
Shapard won her third straight conference title in the 400-meter hurdles and improved her personal record and regional-qualifying time to 57.88.
Shapard joined Chelsey Kaplar, Whitney Wellington and Ashley Patterson in the 4x400-meter relay to break another school record and finish with a regional qualifying time and place third overall with a time of 3:38.96.
Each member of the relay team posted outstanding splits: Shapard (53.8), Kaplar (55.0), Wellington (55.1), and Patterson (53.7). The previous best time in Utah school history was 3:41.60, which was set on May 5, 2009 at the Utah Twilight by Shapard, Wellington, Patterson, and Kaplar.
Utah next heads to the 2009 NCAA West Regional Championships in Eugene, Ore., May 28-30. The Utes will be sending 10 athletes in six different events to the regional meet, including Haley McAllister-Birkeland as a relay alternate.
