SALT LAKE CITY - Junior pitcher Jordan Whatcott became the second Utah baseball player chosen in the 2009 Major League Draft on Thursday, as a 31st round selection by the Los Angeles Angels.
Whatcott was the 951st overall pick. He has until August 15 to decide whether to stay at Utah for his senior year or sign with the Angels.
Whatcott, who transferred to Utah this season from South Mountain Community College, led Utah with a 4.19 ERA and had a 5-3 record on the year. A second-team All-Mountain West Conference selection, he was second on the team with 61 strikeouts and led the MWC with seven runners picked off. Whatcott also tied for second in the conference with 25 batters struck out looking. He only allowed two home runs all season. Whatcott earned several wins over ranked teams, including pitching six innings of two-hit shutout ball in a 2-0 win over No. 4 Texas A&M and picking up a 7-3 win over No. 1 UC Irvine. He made two starts in the MWC Tournament and pitched a game in relief for a save and was named to the All-Tournament team. Whatcott started Utah's first game of the NCAA Regional against Cal State Fullerton.
Senior pitcher Brian Budrow was also selected in this year's draft, going in the 28th round on Wednesday to the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Recent Utah players selected by the Angels in the draft include Jay Brossman in 2007 (36th round) and Ryan Bailey in 2001 (31st round).
